Jefferson wins one for Dominic Haines; GHSA traditional titles awarded in Classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A Friday in Macon

Jefferson’s victory in the Class 3A championship marked the program’s 25th traditional wrestling championship and the team’s 46th overall title.

But compared to each of those triumphant victories which helped to solidify the greatest wrestling dynasty in the history of the state, this one meant more. And each program in attendance at the Macon Centreplex Friday had one talented young wrestler on their collective minds.

Dominic Haines suffered a severe neck injury in the 144-pound quarterfinals matchup Thursday, leaving him with no feeling below his neck, according to a Facebook post shared by his family. Haines underwent emergency surgery to reduce swelling in his neck and began to regain feeling, according to an update from the family Friday.

Weathering the tragic event required putting an emphasis on teamwork and family. And the Dragons responded as well as they could.

Jefferson got individual championships from Cap Benson (190 pounds), Fischer West (175), Dallas Russell (157), Cruz Hezel (138) and Roman Belardo (132) to lead the team in its 209-point victory which beat out North Hall (144 points), Lumpkin County (113) and White County (90.5).

Cass secured the program’s third traditional championship – 2006 and 2022 – with an 186-point finish to beat out defending-champion Central-Carroll (159.5) and Woodland-Cartersville (143) in the 4A championship. Hunter Barrett (120 pounds) and Aiden Piatt (144) led the Colonels with individual titles.

In Class 2A, Lovett won the team’s 14th title and third in four seasons after scoring 191.5 points to beat out two-time Clas 2A defending champion Rockmart (150.5) and Franklin County (131). The Lions got individual championships from Chris Mance (190), Patrick Smyth (132), Cael Kusky (126), Xavier Mance (120) and Hayes Kennedy (106) in the victory.

In Class 1A, Social Circle won the program’s eighth championship and third-consecutive title after a 184.5-point performance which beat Toombs County (132) and Mount Pisgah (101.5). The Redskins got individual championships from Dane Kracht (157), Curtis Duren (138), James Sievers (132), and Gable Hargrove (106).
