Storied champions Ware, Camden County preparing for challengers at GHSA Riflery State Championship

The GHSA Riflery teams across the state completed area contests one week ago and must provide the sectional winners/qualifiers to the state coordinator on February 26.

The semifinals for the riflery championships are March 4 to qualify for the state championships March 15 at the Ware County Shooting Sports Complex in Waycross.

There are 10 areas around the state in GHSA riflery competition and some of the top-ranked programs in each area should factor in the state championship.

And of those top-ranked teams, Camden County is an experienced favorite.

The Wildcats enter the final weeks of the regular season as the two-time defending champion and are atop the Area 3 standings at 11-0 ahead of five-time champion Ware County (11-1). In 2023, Camden County set the state record with a combined score of 1,175 from Jordan DeJesus (297), Virginia Boyd (293), Abigail Swain (293) and Skylar Sanford (292).

Ware County won three titles from 2017-2019 and won again in 2022. The Gators’ Laci Jewell set the state’s individual record in 2019 with a score of 298.

Camden (11-0) leads a group of eight undefeated programs around the state – Area 1’s Northside-Columbus (11-0), Area 2’s Wilcox County and Cairo (12-0), Area 4’s Winder-Barrow (10-0), Area 5’s East Coweta (10-0), Area 6’s North Gwinnett (6-0) and Area 8’s Woodward Academy (8-0).
