Led by Sandra Maier, the 27th-ranked Panther women’s golf team claimed the conference title at the recent 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. by posting a third place finish. Maier shot a final round of 73 putting her third overall, two shots back of medalist Carmen Perez-Narbon from UNC Wilmington. Georgia State overcame a three stroke deficit to take the team title away from UNC Wilmington. The Panthers posted a 290 on the final day, edging UNC Wilmington’s 294 to take the title by a single stroke. For the week, Georgia State finished at 304-296-290-890 (+50). The Panthers final round of 290 ties the school record for lowest third round score. “I was confident, going in, that we would have a good day, and the girls stepped up,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “I’m so happy and proud of them for how hard they have worked and the success they have had. This is something we strive for, and we are excited about it.” Anna Scott finished one stroke back of Maier by firing a final round 71, tying the second best score of the tournament. Scott finished in fourth place alone, extending her streak of top-five finishes to four events. By posting top five finishes, Scott and Maier were both named to the CAA All-Tournament team. The win also assures Georgia State a berth in the NCAA Regionals (May 7-9), their fifth in seven years.
With a dramatic 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win over Mihaela Buneau at No. 6 singles, Freshman Martina Ondrackova sealed Georgia State’s 4-3 win against No. 2 seed VCU, (No. 49 nationally) to clinch the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association title. This is the first ever conference title in the history of the Georgia State women’s tennis program. With the championship win, Georgia State earns the CAA automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the first ever appearance for the women’s tennis team. “VCU played a great match and it could have gone either way, luckily it went our way today,” said head coach and 2009 CAA Coach of the Year, Miha Lisac. “I’m very happy for the team and for the ladies, individually. They’ve worked hard over the past two years to achieve what we have achieved today and it’s exciting to see it all come together this way.”
