Wolverines continue to roll, pick up first-ever region win

The football team continued its winning ways last Friday, taking down Pickens 42-7 in the school’s first varsity region contest ever. The game was also a test for Frank Hepler’s Wolverines because it was the program’s first significant road game. The Wolverines passed with flying colors, as the defense allowed Pickens to score on their opening drive and then held them scoreless for the rest of the game. Offensively, the team got a boost from Ethan Shirley, who returned a kick for a score and also scored a touchdown on offense. West will host Creekview next Friday, a team that gave state-ranked Flowery Branch a scare last Friday in a narrow 20-18 loss. The Wolverines are currently 3-0. … The girls cross country team finished second in the Class 1A-3A division at the Carrollton Invitational last Saturday. Taylor Roeck finished first with a time of 20:27.54, and Katherine Gibson finished second. Kelsey Baker took fifth. The Class 3A runner-up from last year, the girls team will try and win a second straight region championship this year.
