In the nine years leading up to the recent 10th annual Westover Relays, the host team had never managed to pull off a sweep of the event. The boys team did its part Friday to try and make history by rallying past Bainbridge for the program’s third straight title and seventh overall, but the girls came up just short as Valdosta claimed the girls title. The Patriots clinched the crown in the final event of the day, the 4×400 relay. Craig Reddix ran anchor and beat out Northside-Columbus to help earn the title. Jackie Childs won the 110-meter hurdles and Chris O’Neal won the shot put for Westover. Bainbridge won the 4×100 relay early in the day to take the lead before Westover rallied. On the girls side, Valdosta earned its first-ever victory in the event by overtaking Westover. Ayanna Mitchell won the discus for Westover while Chakeriah Fletcher won the 300-meter hurdles for Monroe. The Tornadoes finished fourth after winning the event the past four years. Quannesha Gatling performed well for Dougherty, winning the triple jump and 400 and finishing second in the long jump. Gatling is a three-sport star, also excelling in softball and basketball. … Athens Christian scored victories in the discus and shot put at the Beef-O-Brady’s Dragon Invitational at Jefferson to slide past Mill Creek by a scant eight points. Mill Creek scored points with victories in the 4×400 relay, 200- and 400-meter dashes and 800-meter run, but Athens Christian was able to sneak by thanks to top-three finishes in multiple events. Collins Hill finished third as Devin Monroe (triple jump) and Dwayne Smith (100-meter dash) each took home individual events. The host Dragons received a victory from Mason Hamrick in the pole vault to finish seventh. … Mill Creek beat out Collins Hill in a tight race for the girls title. Mill Creek earned nine individual event victories while Collins Hill won two individual events and a pair of relay events. … Finally, Peachtree Ridge swept its own invitational, edging out Brookwood in both the girls and boys competitions. The Lions and Broncos split 11 of the 17 boys events. Peachtree Ridge raced out to an early lead on the girls side before holding off a late Brookwood charge in the field events.
