The Lovett Lions girls lacrosse team are undefeated no more as they were defeated by their division rival Westminster Wildcats 12-2, handing them their first loss of the season.
The Lions were held 10 points below their scoring average as the Wildcats shut them down on defense. On the other side, the Lions had no answer for the Wildcats in transition where they scored many of their points.
Lovett head coach Ryan Randolph really credits the Wildcats and the execution of their game plan for their success against his team.
“They took away what has for us so far been a pretty high-powered offense that’s really solid individually, but also as a unit, so you know, their defense was well-prepared for everything that we had to offer,” coach Randolph said.
Before this game, the Wildcats were previously on a three-game losing streak, but managed to end their streak thanks to superb play from their goalie and midfielders as well as a solid overall team effort.
Coach Randolph credits the Wildcats for their tough play and sees this loss as a great learning opportunity for his team after playing a tough opponent.
“In the short-term, it hurts for sure,” coach Randolph said. “No one ever enjoys losing a rivalry game, but in the long-term, sometimes it’s more beneficial than a win because it helps you to see the things that you still have to work on, resets expectations and sometimes it relights that fire to go out and get another win.”
The Lions are currently the No. 2 seed in Class 1A-5A, but the No. 1 seed is still in reach. They have a big game this Friday against Pace Academy and another big game on Monday against Woodward Academy.
