Westlake High School announced on Thursday afternoon that they have hired Morris Mitchell to lead the school’s football program as their next head coach.
Morris served as the teams defensive coordinator for the Lions under former Lions head coach Rico Zackery, who went 18-7 in his two seasons leading the Westlake football program.
He made the playoffs in both seasons and was eliminated in the second round last season by Colquitt County. Zackery left Westlake to become the defensive end/outside linebackers coach at Eastern Carolina University.

Morris played football at three different schools, such as Shorter University, West Hills College Coalinga and Bluefield College. He was a defensive back on the football field and started at free safety as a true freshman for Bluefield College. Over his career playing college football, Morris was a three-year starter earning his playing time at multiple different schools.
In his second year of college football, Morris attended West Hills College where he started as a sophomore and was put up for numerous awards such as All-Golden Coast League player and runner up for the Best Defensive Back.
While attending Shorter University, he was a team captain as well as a Gulf South Conference Academic All-American.
After his college playing days, Morris became a professional athlete in the Canadian Football League where he was on the practice squad for the Edmonton Eskimos. Morris then signed with the Georgia Firebirds in the National Arena League after being released by the Eskimos. The defensive back recorded 18 tackles and an interception in his time in the NAL.
Morris takes over for a Westlake program who are trying to win their first region championship since 2020 and have made the playoffs for the past 11 years.
