Westlake crowned 2021 Corky Kell 7-on-7 tournament champions

Westlake earned the No. 1 seed and was undefeated when weather cut the Seventh Annual Corky Kell 7-on-7 short and was crowned this year’s champion. The Lions emerged 4-0 from their talented pod that included two-time defending tournament champion Marietta, Central Gwinnett, Archer and North Atlanta. Westlake opened up a 26-2 win over Central Gwinnett, scored a 23-7 win over Marietta, defeated Archer 20-6 and held off North Atlanta 24-9.

Parkview scored a 15-12 win over West Forsyth to match up with Westlake in the second round and the Lions defeated Parkview 33-14.  The Lions got a rematch with Archer following their 26-20 win over Creekside and topped the Tigers 27-18. All of the participants got to play at least five games and there were plenty of other top teams that were still in the single-elimination tournament when weather cut the event short around 4:50 p.m.

Westlake was not the only team that went 4-0 in pool play, however, the tie breaker was determined by the fewest points allowed and that favored the Lions. Collins Hill took the No. 2 seed after a 4-0 run in pool play, but the Eagles allowed 39 total points to Westlake’s tournament-best 24. Collins Hill opened up the tournament with a massive 28-2 win over Carver-Atlanta and was on the opposite side of Westlake in the bracket.

Additionally, Marietta was able to score a dramatic 29-28 win over Walton in the second round—in what was one of the many close games seen during the busy action at Roswell Area Parks. Westlake was led throughout the tournament by junior quarterback and MaxPreps All-American RJ Johnson, who helped lead the Lions to a school-record 11-2 finish this past season and looks poised to have a massive 2021 year this fall.

Class 2A-based Rabun County was led by Georgia-commit Gunner Stockton and earned the No. 4 seed. The Wildcats scored big victories over Lanier (28-8) before falling to Johns Creek (29-27). This year’s 45-team field was the largest in the event’s history and had schools from all over the state that represented seven different classifications.
