Norcross took a bit of a tumble in the girls Class AAAAA rankings after falling twice last week. North Gwinnett defeated Norcross for the region’s No. 1 seed and moved up to No. 3. The top four teams in Class AAAA remained unchanged as Chamblee, Statesboro and Douglas County each have 24-1 records. Warner Robins is back in the rankings at No. 10. It seems no one can stop the Washington County girls, who remain No. 1 in the Class AAA poll. The Class AA poll was untouched as Morgan County, Laney and Model all prepare for the playoffs with just one loss. In Class A, Taylor County jumped up a few spots while Wesleyan remains a strong No. 1 team with plenty of scoring power.
The boys rankings experienced a shakeup after several hot teams knocked off other ranked opponents in the final weekend of the regular season. Newly-ranked Marietta defeated Wheeler behind a strong effort from Damon Mitchell, then the Blue Devils won a coin flip to secure the region’s top seed. North Cobb exacted a measure of revenge against Harrison with a 52-50 win Friday night. Harrison would win a tiebreaker coin flip for the Region 4-AAAAA top seed. Despite nearly double-digit losses, Miller Grove, led by McDonald’s All-American Tony Parker, still sits atop the Class AAAA rankings with Fayette County and Douglas County No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Alcovy managed to sneak back into the rankings at No. 10. In Class AAA, Washington County’s undefeated bid may have come up just short, but WaCo still sits No. 2 while Grady was the biggest mover, jumping from No. 10 to No. 6. Vidalia lost to Toombs County and thus dropped down to No. 4 while Jordan assumed the top spot. GAC sits No. 2 while Buford ranks third. South Atlanta moved up to No. 9 in the recent poll. In the state’s smallest classification, Taylor County nudged out Portal for the No. 10 spot.
