Week 9 Baseball Rankings

In Class 6A, No. 1 Etowah dropped a 5-1 loss to Class 5A No. 1 Houston County to move to 21-2 on the year. The Eagles are ranked No. 2 in the latest MaxPreps National poll. North Gwinnett held on to No. 2 by splitting a two-game series with No. 5 Parkview and Buford moved up from No. 6 to No. 3 this week after former No. 3 ranked Lowndes slid to No. 4 with three-straight out-of-state losses and Buford defeated Loganville in a major top 10 clash. In Class 5A, Lee County and Woodward Academy replaced River Ridge and Lassiter in the poll and debut at No. 9 and No. 10.

In Class 4A, Cartersville and Starr’s Mill replaced Central-Carroll and Kell in the poll. The Class 3A poll shifted with Troup moving from No. 8 to No. 5 after the Tigers grew their win-streak to 12-straight. Additionally, LaGrange returned to the poll in place of Dawson County and sits at No. 8. In Class A Div. II, No. 1 ranked Lanier County fell 4-3 to Tiftarea Academy in non-region play to snap the Bulldogs’ eight-game win-streak. Because it was a non-region loss and Class A Division II does not use the Postseason Rating System (PSR) to seed the playoffs, it did not impact the current battle. Lanier County, Charlton County and Irwin County all still have just two losses in the region. Lanier County won each series 2-1 in the head-to-head with Charlton County and Irwin County and therefore owns the tiebreaks.

The Bulldogs have six games left on the regular season schedule and all six are region matchups with three-straight against Clinch County and three-straight against Brooks County. Clinch County has already been swept by Charlton and Irwin County, while Brooks County has been swept by Charlton County and will play Irwin before closing out with Lanier. Nonetheless, Clinch County at 9-6 in the region is currently at No. 4 behind its three ranked region opponents and the Panthers swept Echols County in all three matchups and the Bobcats are the next closest team in the eight-team region at 5-10-giving them a four-game lead and the tiebreaker with just six games left. Clinch will play Lanier County this week, while Echols County has No. 3 Charlton County. Irwin County improved to 16-2 in region play and Lanier County and Charlton County both sit at 13-2 heading into the final regular season games.
