Week 10 Baseball Rankings

The final week of the regular season offers top 10 showdowns, critical region matchups with playoff berths on the line and the final stretch to influence the rankings before postseason play begins. In Class 6A, No. 1 ranked Etowah is 23-2 and defeated Cherokee 11-3 last week to set the stage for its double header against the Warriors tonight. After closing out the region schedule, the Eagles will take on Blessed Trinity and Hillgrove before the playoffs. Etowah swept its Region 5 rival Walton and took 2-of-3 against North Paulding and so the standings will be impacted if Cherokee is able to avoid the sweep and depending on what happens with the previously-mentioned North Paulding and Walton this final week. No. 6 ranked Walton has three region games left against Marietta that the Raiders need to sweep in order to grant them a No. 2 seed and North Paulding will have a three-game battle with Cherokee right after the Warriors wrap up their double-header with Etowah Monday night. There is going to be a lot of action in Region 5 this week and it involves an unranked Cherokee team that can shake things up in addition to Etowah, North Paulding and Walton. No. 2 North Gwinnett is 24-2 and will close out the regular season with two Peachtree Ridge matchups and a cross-classification finale against Paideia. The Bulldogs split a two-game series against Parkview to open this month—winning Game 1 11-0 and falling in Game 2 7-3. North Gwinnett followed its head-to-head with Parkview by sweeping Tennessee’s Greeneville 6-1, 8-7. At No. 3, Buford swept Grayson and dropped a matchup to Mt. Paran 7-4 and faces Dacula for a three-game series this week. At No. 4, Lowndes wrapped up its Region 1 schedule by sweeping rival Valdosta and will take on Lee County and Thomas County Central Monday and Wednesday to conclude its regular season slate. No. 5 Parkview is 11-1 in Region 7 and will take on Brookwood—which is 10-2 in region play in a two-game series this week to try and clinch the No. 1 seed. At No. 8, East Coweta is 9-0 in Region 2 and will close out the year against Douglas County for a three-game series—which is 0-9 in region play after already securing the No. 1 seed out of Region 2. Tift County moved up to No. 9 this week and Grayson slid to No. 10. This was the only shift in Class 6A this week. Tift County swept Camden County 13-5, 11-2, 11-0 this past week to earn the No. 2 seed and will have non-region games against Schley County and Lee County to close out the year. At No. 10, Grayson had a tough week with its 6-0 and 10-7 losses to No. 3 Buford and then a 7-0 loss to Class 5A’s Loganville. The Rams are still 13-2 in Region 4 and can earn the No. 1 seed this week when they face Archer for a three-game series. Unranked Archer is 12-3 in the region standings—placing them just one game behind the Rams.

The Class 5A poll did not shift this week. No. 1 Houston County (23-5) swept Lee County to clinch the Region 2 No. 1 seed and will have Luella and Richmond Hill as its final two games. No. 2 Pope grew its win-streak to 18-straight and will close out the year with a three-game series with Region 6 rival Lassiter. Loganville has already clinched the No. 1 seed and has Clarke Central and Cherokee Bluff on this week’s slate. The biggest matchup to watch will be No. 5 Villa Rica against No. 7 South Paulding. Additionally, Newnan has won 12-straight games since its four-game losing streak earlier in the year and remains No. 6. No. 8 Effingham County did not shift after dropping a pair of games to Class 3A No. 1 Harlem and the poll is rounded out by No. 9 Woodward Academy and No. 10 Lee County.

Class 4A saw Marist move up to No. 3 this week from its previous spot at No. 6. Marist used dominant performances and victories against Buford (12-5), Loganville (10-1) and Mill Creek (8-5) last week to rise in the poll. The biggest series to watch this week in Class 4A will be between No. 6 Ware County and No. 8 Wayne County and then No. 9 Starr’s Mill against Harris County.
