In Class 6A, Douglas County moved up to No. 1 after its dominant 42-7 win over Cedar Grove. The Tigers held Cedar Grove to just six total yards in the first quarter and did not give up a touchdown until 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Quarterback D.J Bordeaux finished with three touchdowns and 142 yards through the air. Rah’Keith Kelly hauled in two touchdown passes and also scored on a 23-yard run. Carrollton comes in at No. 2 after its 24-14 win over Woodward Academy. Julian Lewis finished with 126 yards off of 9-of-15 passing and had three touchdowns in the first half. The Score Atlanta poll was the only rankings in the state that had North Gwinnett in its Week 1 top 10 and the Bulldogs are moving up from No. 5 to No. 3 this week after a 39-17 win over McEachern. Valdosta moved up from No. 7 to No. 4 after a 65-19 win over Tucker and Score Atlanta was also the only poll to have the Wildcats in the top 10 to start the year. Collins Hill debuts at No. 10 this week after defeating Grayson 20-19 and the Rams fell out of the poll. Additionally, Buford slid one spot to No. 5 after falling to Milton 13-10 and will be hosting Benedictine this week. Colquitt County moved up from No. 8 to No. 6, Walton shifted down from No. 6 to No. 7 and Mill Creek moved up a spot to No. 8. Camden County also moved up one spot from No. 10 to No. 9.
In Class 5A, Milton remains the No.1 team after defeating a tough Buford team 13-10. The Eagles had to endure a two-hour rain/lightning delay and were able to carve out a victory against a state champion contender. They will face American Heritage (FL) next week. No. 2 Hughes scored 52 points in their win against Westlake and leaned on that strong offensive line. The Panthers ran for 417 yards and five touchdowns and had three rushers with over 100 yards including Carsyn Baker, Jabari Jones, and Qwantavius Wiggins. No. 3 Gainesville had a strong offensive and defensive performance and held Marietta to just three points in their 41-3 victory on Friday. No. 4 Thomas County Central and No. 5 Coffee each scored 50+ points in their dominant wins showing they are middle and south Georgia powerhouses. No. 6 Houston County looks like the real deal led by QB Antwann Hill who threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns. No. 7 Lee County defeated Warner Robins 45-28 this past week and leaned on their star running back Ousmane Kromah who finished with 139 rushing yards and a touchdown. No. 8 Dutchtown makes their debut in the poll after their 47-28 victory against Stockbridge. No. 9 Rome was idle this week. No. 10 Woodward Academy put up a strong fight against top-ranked Carrollton but lost 24-14 on Friday.
In Class 4A, No. 1 Perry defeated Baldwin 37-6 and were led by Ahmad Gordon’s 115 yards and touchdown off a tough 23 carries and his teammate Decorrion Daniels’ 101 yards and two rushing scores off 17 carries. Kiel Sparks lit up the passing game with two touchdowns off of five catches for 76 yards. North Oconee moved up to No. 2 after Warner Robins slid from No. 2 to No. 8 after its loss to Lee County. Benedictine dropped out after falling to Rabun Gap 41-17 and Marist sits at No. 7 after its win over Jefferson . No. 3 Ware County, No. 4 Cartersville and No. 5 Cass all moved up one spot to their current positions and Blessed Trinity moved up two slots from No. 8 to No. 6 after a 24-0 win over St. Pius.
In Class 3A, there was a major shake-up in this week’s poll as six top ten teams lost. No. 1 Sandy Creek defeated East Coweta 21-7 at home and looked strong defensively. Amari Latimer led the team with 155 rushing yards and two touchdowns. No. 2 Douglass-Atlanta’s defense made a statement against No. 8 LaGrange holding their offense to less than 100 yards of total offense through three quarters. The Astros have athletes all over the field and it looks like they could make a run this year. No. 3 Monroe Area defeated Loganville 49-20 in Week 1 and leaned on junior running back Jitt Carr who rushed for 335 yards and two touchdowns. No. 4 Peach County defeated Northeast Macon 58-10. No. 5 Troup County makes their debut in the poll after a 39-6 victory over Villa Rica. No. 6 Upson-Lee also makes its debut after a 28-14 win against Union Grove.
In Class 2A, Rockmart dropped from No. 3 to No. 7 after falling 24-3 to Cedartown in its opener and Carver-Columbus moved up from No. 5 to No. 3 behind top-ranked Pierce County and No. 2 Burke County. Carver defeated Whitewater 20-13, Pierce County was off this week and Burke County dominated Richmond Academy 44-9. Cook moved up from No. 9 to No. 4 after a 45-13 win over Berrien and Stephens County also made a five-spot leap from No. 10 to No. 5 after a 28-10 win over Habersham Central. Morgan County earned a spot in the poll at No. 6 after a 48-16 win over Warren County and are a team floating under the radar with head coach Clint Jenkins at the helm.
In Class A, Division I No. 1 Toombs County remains as the top team. The bulldogs begin the season against No. 7 (3A) Dougherty. No. 2 Dublin defeated state runner-up Swainsboro 41-21. Dublin rushed for 313 yards on the ground. No. 3 defeated Sonoraville 21-14 in overtime. No. 4 Bleckley County shut out Rutland 31-0. Senior Tyrek Mack led the team with eight tackles and four tackles for loss. No. 5 Fitzgerald and No. 6 Swainsboro each suffered losses this week. No. 7 opens the season against Jordan on August 23rd. No. 8 Rabun County defeated White County in a high-scoring contest 40-28. No. 9 Thomasville defeated Brooks County 35-12 and No. 10 Commerce suffered a 42-21 loss to Wesleyan.
In Class A, Division II No. 1 Bowdon remains the top team despite the loss to Fellowship Christian. It was a nail-biter and came down to the end with the Paladins winning 36-35. The Red Devils are still a top team in the state. No. 2 Irwin County defeated Fitzgerald 19-13. No. 3 Irwin County and No. 4 Seminole County each picked up wins this week. No. 5 Schley County suffered a 32-14 loss to Seminole County. No. 6 Manchester lost to Harris County 16-8 in a defensive contest. No. 7 Clinch County defeated Bacon County 36-21. No. 8 Telfair County suffered a 24-8 loss to Lamar County. No. 9 Metter makes its season debut on Friday night against Tattnall County. No. 10 Johnson County lost to East Laurens 13-8.
The Class A-3A Private poll stayed the same with No. 1-6. North Cobb Christian moved up from No. 9 to No. 7 and Athens Academy debuted at No. 8 after a 45-22 win over previous No. 10 ranked Aquinas. Lovett’s 21-18 win over Westminster sent the Lions into the poll and they replaced Trinity Christian after its 35-3 loss to Ola. Greater Atlanta Christian moved down from No. 7 to No. 10 after a 20-3 loss to Newnan in its opener.
