Wednesday Roundup: Yanks move closer to Series, Beckham RoY

CC Sabathia is proving to be worth every penny the Yankees gave him before the season started. Last night the big lefty threw eight powerful innings and the Yankee bats backed him up as New York whipped the Angels 10-1 in game four of the ALCS. Sabathia struck out four while allowing just one run on five hits in eight innings. This postseason, the ace is 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA. Alex Rodriguez homered for the third straight game and has connected on five this postseason, moving to within one of Bernie Williams’ record. Johnny Damon also homered and Melky Cabrera posted a two-run single to give Sabathia a three-run cushion early. The Yankees lead the best-of-seven series three games to one.

After putting injured cornerback Brian Williams on IR and ending his season, the Atlanta Falcons welcomed back a player that helped out last season. Jamaal Fudge was signed yesterday and will move into the safety rotation. Last season with the Falcons, Fudge made one interception, blocked one punt, recovered a fumble, and made 23 tackles.

Colby Armstrong gave the Atlanta Thrashers a chance late with a game-tying goal late in the third period against the Montreal Canadiens, but the Thrashers couldn’t keep up with the Habs in the shootout and fell 2-1. Ilya Kovalchuk and Rick Peverley were both stopped in the shootout while Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta both found the net to earn a shootout win for Montreal.

Finally, former Georgia Bulldog shortstop Gordon Beckham changed positions with the Chicago White Sox and yesterday took home The Sporting News 2009 AL Rookie of the Year honors. A panel of 338 major league players voted Beckham as the AL’s top rookie after the third baseman hit .280 with 14 home runs, 28 doubles and 63 RBI after making his MLB debut in June. JA Happ won for the National League.
