Colby Armstrong gave the Atlanta Thrashers a lead last night, Maxim Afinogenov reestablished the lead in the third period and Johan Hedberg allowed it to stand by stopping 34 of 35 shots in Atlanta’s 2-1 win over the Anaheim Duckslast night. Hedberg has allowed just one goal in each of his last three contests. For Atlanta, Armstrong netted his ninth goal of the season and Rich Peverley’s assist of Afinogenov was his sixth point in his last eight games, moving him to third on the team in points with 41. With the win, Atlanta’s 23rd of the season, the team moved into third place in the Southeast Division and into a tie for ninth place in the conference, just one point out of the eighth playoff spot which Florida currently holds. Four teams are actually tied with 55 points. Atlanta technically sits just one point away from the No.6 spot.
Before the season Roddy White was paid to be a No.1 wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons. White responded by leading the team in receptions, added another 1000-yard season to his resume, racked up 11 TDs and yesterday, received his second straight invitation to the Pro Bowl. White was added to the team yesterday after Minnesota Sidney Rice withdrew from this weekend’s game in Miami, thus opening the spot for White. This past season, White moved into fourth place on the Falcons career receiving yard list.
Finally, in The House of Blue last night, both the Norcross boys and girls teams knocked out Peachtree Ridgesquads looking for a pair of road upsets in Region 7-AAAAA basketball play. The 82 points was a season high for the Norcross women. Afterwards it was sweet redemption for the boys and Norcross avenged an early season loss at Peachtree Ridge with a 71-54 win. The Lions led Norcross 44-43 entering the final frame but that is when future UConn Husky Jeremy Lamb took over on his way to 20 points. E Victor Nickerson had 13 points and 9 rebounds in the win as well for Norcross. CJ Blackwell played well in defeat. Gwinnett County’s leading rebounder entering the game squeezed 11 boards and notched 15 points for the Lions. If you missed the game, be sure and check it out on gpb.org/basketball.
