After just missing the playoffs last season, the Minnesota Twins eeked into the playoffs with a 6-5 12-inning win over the Detroit Tiger in the one-game playoff for the AL Central crown. Carlos Gomez, the centerpiece acquired in the trade that sent Johan Santana to the Mets, scored from second base on an Alexi Casilla single to cap off the Twins run to the division title. The Twins, 17-4 in their last 21 games now head to New York to face the Yankees in Game One tonight in the teams’ ALDS series. The Twins are 0-7 against the Yankees this season.
The defending World Champion Philadelphia Phillies open up the playoffs tonight looking to become the first back-to-back champions since the Yankees won three straight from 1998-2000. Cliff Lee takes the mound tonight against the Colorado Rockies out of the NL West. Game two is tomorrow. No National League team has gone to the World Series in consecutive years since Atlanta did in 1995 and 1996. The St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers will face off in the other NLDS.
A concussion story not getting nearly the same pub as Tim Tebow’s story involves Georgia running back Caleb King, who suffered a concussion and a broken jaw against LSU on Saturday. King is likely out this Saturday for the Dawgs game at Tennessee but head coach Mark Richt has not ruled King out completely. Richard Samuel will get the start according to Richt but Wayshaun Ealey could see more playing time after leading Georgia in rushing against LSU. For King, it is yet another injury in a career riddled with them since the running back left Parkview High School for GAC and eventually Georgia.
Finally, Parkview Panther girls basketball standout Lauren Coleman has declared her intent to sign with Florida State. Coleman reportedly turned down scholarship offers from Georgia and Auburn to commit to the Seminoles. Coleman averaged 14.4 ppg with 4.5 rpg and 4.3 apg last year.
