Wednesday Roundup: Green to play vs Tech? Greinke wins CY

The University of Georgia Bulldogs needed OT and a miracle buzzer-beating three-pointer last season from a player no longer with the program to knock off Wofford. This season, the three-point attempt missed the mark and the Bulldogs fell to the Terriers 60-57. Georgia led early only to watch Wofford go on a 16-0 run late in the first half. The Dawgs kept chipping away thanks to Travis Leslie’s 17 points and Trey Thompkins 14 points and 16 rebounds. Georgia had three chances to tie the game with under one minute to play but Thompkins turned the ball over once, Dustin Ware missed what would have been a game-tying free throw and then Ware missed a three with under four seconds to play. Georgia is now 1-1 on the season under new coach Mark Fox.

Speaking of Georgia, while Bacarri Rambo and AJ Green are both out for this weekend’s game against Kentucky, head coach Mark Richt said yesterday that they have not yet been ruled out for the regular season finale at Georgia Tech. Green suffered a shoulder injury against Auburn after missing the Tennessee Tech game with a bruised lung. Rambo suffered a concussion and was carted off of the field late in the fourth quarter against the Tigers.

Following two sub-.500 seasons GAC football head coach Ken Robinson has resigned his post as the head of the Spartans. Robinson took over in 2007 and led Greater Atlanta Christian to the playoffs in 2008, despite a 4-6 regular season record. His 2009 season ended two weeks ago with GAC finishing 1-9. Before taking over as head coach after Jimmy Chupp retired, Robinson served as a defensive coach and as coordinator for four years.

The American League announced its Cy Young award winner and Zack Greinke easily won the vote over Seattle’s Felix Hernandez. Greinke was 16-8 with the major’s lowest ERA 2.16. He received 25 of 28 first-place votes while Hernandez was 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA and only received 2 first-place votes. In other Royals news, the club signed former Brave utility man Wilson Betemit to a minor league deal. Betemit played with Chicago last season.
