Volleyball adds to trophy case; football to host Washington Co.

The volleyball team won the state championship for the sixth time in the past eight years and eighth time overall by dominating No. 1-seed St. Pius 3-0 in the final. The Lady War Eagles did not lose a game during the postseason, which included the area, sectional and state tournaments. Woodward defeated West Laurens, Lafayette, Columbus and Oconee County in the state playoffs. The team finished the year 35-13 overall with a perfect 9-0 Region 4-AAA record. Zoey Horton finished with 13 kills while Mariah Woodson had nine in the final match. … The football team clinched a playoff spot with a 41-0 win over Woodland-Stockbridge on Friday night. Woodward finished second in Region 4-AAA with a 7-1 record. The team dropped a heartbreaker to Jackson on Oct. 31, falling by a score of 14-7. A fake punt by the Red Devils with two minutes left in the contest proved to be the difference. The War Eagles (7-3 overall) will now head to the state playoffs where they will host Washington County on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
