Vogler, Fields and Burrows join The Official Visit; S. Paulding corner earns prestigious invite

We had another good edition of The Official Visit, our all-recruiting radio show on 790 The Zone (from 2-4), last Sunday, as three of the state’s top recruits joined us for some pretty interesting dialogue. We got the chance to catch up with Brookstone School tight end Brian Vogler and the 6-foot-7, 248-pound athlete had some pretty interesting things to say. If you’ve ever had the chance to watch Vogler play, it probably crossed your mind that the massive pass catcher would actually make quite the left tackle on the next level. Yet, according to Vogler, who has offers from Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and Clemson, to name a few, any school that has recruited him for offensive line has been crossed off his list.

“I feel like I’ve proven myself as a tight end and I’m getting recruited as a tight end, so I’m going to stick with it,” Vogler said. “I’m having fun at the position and that’s the main thing, having fun.”

We also discussed the Brookstone product’s familial connections to the University of Miami, though Vogler explained his interest in “The U” is actually the result of other considerations.

“The big thing about Miami is if you want to be a tight end and you want to make it big, I’m pretty sure Miami has been pretty successful at that lately with all the tight ends they are producing,” he explained.

And you can eliminate Auburn from the Vogler sweepstakes, as the senior-to-be mentioned he has not been in contact with the school since March.

As for summer plans, Vogler took a visit to Alabama on Monday (June 8), will be at Oklahoma on Friday, and in Baton Rouge a week later (Friday, June 19). And if you’re wondering why no visits have been scheduled to either of the in-state powers, the answer is simple: neither Georgia nor Georgia Tech have offered the pro-style tight end.

He won’t be waiting for the two schools to come knocking either, as he hopes to make an announcement some time between August and September.

COMMITTED BUT BUSY

Often times in the recruiting game, an early commitment from a player opens the door for dirty recruiting from competing schools. Yet we got the chance to speak with current Georgia verbal commitment and Dalton defensive end Jalen Fields on Sunday and, while a hoard of schools are still fighting for his services, the talented prospect has apparently not yet encountered any questionable tactics.

“No, I haven’t really (experienced dirty recruiting),” Fields explained. “Alabama sent me a letter saying how they beat Georgia this year and other schools do that kind of thing, too. They try and say I should go to Oregon or Tennessee or wherever because I can start there as a freshman, my first year, and just a lot of stuff like that.”

And since the 6-5, 250-pound prospect ended his recruitment so early in the process, how will he use his summer months, a time many recruits use to visit their colleges of interest?

“I will work academically still. I took the SAT May 2nd and I’m still waiting on my scores to get back,” he said. “I’m going to take that as many times as I can. But this summer, as for now, I’ll visit Athens July 18th on Dawg Night, and Georgia has a camp on (June) 13th and I’m going to try my best to get down there for that.”

We also had a conversation on Sunday with Walton defensive end Brandon Burrows, who will miss his entire senior season due to a recent ACL tear. And while the 6-3, 240-pound Burrows was certainly disappointed at first by the injury, he spoke to us about some of the positives that may come from all the extra time.

“The injury is unfortunate but there are a lot of pros with it,” he said. “I get to focus on football from a recruiting standpoint, evaluate things closely, and scrutinize schools better than I would have because I would have been caught up in my senior season. So I get to take a closer look at colleges and focus on school and finish my senior year strong (academically).”
Interestingly, Burrows also informed us that no schools have been chased off or withdrawn their offer in response to the injury and that he has actually received three more offers since the unfortunate incident, which he predicts will take eight months to recover from.

As of now, Burrows has no set timetable for a decision, but does have a top three of Georgia, Florida and Virginia Tech.

TOP CORNER INVITED

Finally, South Paulding defensive back Ryan Ayers received some exciting news last week when he earned an invite to the Under Armour All-America game, which takes place every year at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. The talented corner also visited Athens last Tuesday and now has the Bulldogs near the top of his list with Tech. He will be visiting the University of Alabama this week.

Janovitz can be heard on The Official Visit, Score Atlanta’s all-recruiting radio show, on 790 The Zone every Sunday from 2-4. He can be reached at sjanovitz@scoreatl.com.
