Verwey picks up national honor; soccer teams maintain winning records

Georgia State golfer Iliska Verwey was named National Player of the Week by GolfWeek.com for her medalist performance at the University of Cincinnati Women’s Fall Classic. Verwey is currently ranked 29th in the nation by GolfWeek.com with a 70.26 scoring average. Georgia State’s women’s team is ranked 34th by the Web site.

Caitlin Price has earned Runner of the Week honors as announced by the CAA. Price, a 2007 All-CAA runner, placed second overall in a field of 75 runners at the 20th Annual Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama last weekend. She finished the 5K course in a time of 17:29:19, as she led the Panthers to a second-place team finish.

Lindsay Mortellaro and senior Kay Harbrueger each scored second-half goals to lead the women’s soccer team to a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over William & Mary last Sunday. “I’m so proud of our girls for this win,” said head coach Domenic Martelli. “We prepared the same way for both games this weekend, and things did not go our way against Old Dominion. We had faith in our game plan, stuck to it, focused, and it worked out today.” The Panthers improved to 8-3 (1-1 CAA). … In men’s soccer action, in Hempstead, N.Y., Joey Syfert and Stephan Minyono scored the two goals in Georgia State’s 2-2 double-overtime contest against Hofstra in the CAA opener. Said head coach Kerem Dasher, “Overall, I thought it was a great effort from us. The guys showed character and really fought for this tie. I always say that Hofstra is one of the toughest places to play in the country.” The Panthers (4-2-2) look ahead to Saturday when they play host to Northeastern.

The women’s tennis team netted seven singles wins and three doubles victories this past weekend at the 22nd annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by Alabama. In doubles competition, Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova got an early win over Samford’s Taylor Morgan and Lindsey Mallory in the first round of the Crimson Draw. State won 8-6 over Samford but fell 8-4 to Auburn-Montgomery’s Tereza Veverkova and Delia Sescioreanu in the second round.

Football doesn’t kick off until 2010 but the coaching staff will be holding walk-on tryouts for students on Oct. 15. The tryouts will be held at the James R. Hallford Memorial Stadium in Clarkston from 4-6 p.m. For more information, call 404-413-4110. … The volleyball team continues to struggle. The Panthers fell to Towson 3-0 last Sunday to drop to (0-14, 0-2 in the CAA). The team was led by Michelle Trimble’s seven kills, while Liz Schaab added six. … Former men’s assistant basketball coach Mark Danhoff has landed a new job. He has been named an assistant coach at Texas-Pan American. … I was in Greenville, N.C., this past weekend with Furman football. The Paladins beat Chattanooga 35-10.
