Verwey earns conference honors as women’s golf wins at Cincinnati

The 25th-ranked women’s golf team began its season with a team victory at the University of Cincinnati Women’s Fall Classic last week. Iliska Verwey shot a 70 to cap her tournament, which included a school- and course-record 64. Her 6-under performance, a five-stroke advantage on the field, was good for the third medalist honor of her career. As a result, Verwey earned CAA Women’s Golfer of the Week honors. Cathrine Madsen shot a final-round 76 to go with her 74-71. Madsen’s round gave her a third-place finish of 221 (5-over) for the week. “I’m really excited for the girls,” said head coach Cathy Mant. “They played well, kept it together, and made a lot of good decisions that led to birdies. We posted great scores this week.” The Panthers outdistanced Augusta State by 16 strokes and host Cincinnati by 27 to claim the team crown. The Panthers will hit the course again on Monday in Boulder, Colo., for the Heather Farr/University of Colorado Memorial Tournament. Men’s golf participates in the Hartford Invitational in North Falmouth, Mass., on Sunday and Monday.

With Minor League Baseball’s season in the books, I picked up the former Panthers’ final stats from Baseball America this week. Pitcher Adam Bowling, in the Chicago White Sox organization with the Kannapolis Intimidators, finished with a 4-1 record and an ERA of 3.67 in 26 appearances. Bowling had 55 strikeouts and only nine walks. Aeden McQueary, splitting time between the San Diego Padres’ Lake Elsinore Storm and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Hickory Crawdads, hit only .108 with Lake Elsinore and .194 with Hickory. Charlie Pelt, who was released earlier in the season by the St. Louis Cardinals organization, posted a .152 batting average in 33 games with one home run and five RBIs while with Quad City.
