For the second time within a week, head coach Mark Fox’s Bulldogs had a ranked opponent on the ropes. But it was not to be Saturday afternoon at Rupp Arena. No. 3 Kentucky fouled out three Georgia players and defeated Fox’s Dawgs 76-68 on Saturday afternoon to improve their record to 16-0, the best for a UK squad since 1965-66.
The Bulldogs (8-6) received a season-high 20 points from Travis Leslie including a rim-shaking dunk over UK all-everything freshman DeMarcus Cousins in the first half. Trey Thompkins contributed 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while former walk-on Ricky McPhee notched 13 points, including a trio of three pointers.
After falling behind by 11 points in the first half, UGA bounced back with a 21-5 run to take a 35-34 halftime lead.
The Dawgs were down by just one point with six minutes remaining but could score just one more field goal the rest of the way.
UK freshmen sensations John Wall and Cousins scored the Wildcats’ final 11 points.
The Dawgs saw the Cats go to the free throw 32 times while Georgia strode to the charity stripe a mere 15 times. UGA finished the game with 25 fouls to 14 for the Cats. Chris Barnes, Albert Jackson, and Jeremy Price all fouled out for Georgia.
UGA was attempting to win twice in a row at Rupp Arena and for just the sixth time ever.
Georgia will host Ole Miss on Wednesday night in the SEC home opener.
