Two ranked girls matchups scheduled for Tuesday evening highlight key region matchups as the regular season heads toward the region tournaments and the playoffs.
Oconee County’s (16-5, 5-1) girls have a chance to hand No. 2-ranked Jefferson (16-4, 6-0) its only Region 8 loss when the No. 4-ranked Warriors travel to the Dragons Tuesday. Jefferson won the previous meeting against Oconee this season 48-37 but since that loss, Oconee County has won five-straight contests including a 55-17 victory against East Hall Friday.
Jefferson is coming off an 81-21 victory against West Hall Friday which righted the ship after its 66-59 loss to Galloway on Jan. 20. Senior Julie Azeltine leads Oconee with 16 points per game and senior Elizabeth Wynn adds 10 points and nine rebounds per game.
White County is 16-4 overall and 8-1 in Region 6 play heading into its Tuesday matchup against No. 10 Dawson County, which the No. 6-ranked Warriors beat 58-54 on Jan. 9. White is coming off a 93-8 victory against Johnson-Gainesville at home Friday. Dawson County is 13-7 overall, 6-3 in Region 6 play and coming off a 56-37 victory against Lumpkin County Friday.
Around the class, boys – Cedar Grove is ranked atop the boys basketball standings at 18-3 and 10-0 in Region 5 play. The Saints are led by four players scoring in double-figures – Junior Emanuel Green (18.5 points per game), senior Keith Gillespie (13), senior Yusef Bower (13) and junior Javonte Floyd (10). The Saints play North Clayton on the road Tuesday before hosting No. 7 Douglass Friday. … No. 6 East Hall plays at Monroe Area Tuesday before traveling to No. 5 Cherokee Bluff for a Region 8 matchup. East Hall is 17-3 overall and 5-1 in Region 8 play while Cherokee Bluff is 19-2 overall and 5-1 in league play. East Hall’s only region loss was to Cherokee Bluff 76-72 on Jan. 9. The Vikings also lost to Cherokee Bluff 73-65 in a Holiday event on Dec. 21 which did not count toward region standings. … No. 8 Westside-Augusta plays at Richmond Academy Tuesday before traveling to No. 10 Baldwin Friday. …
Around the class, girls – Monroe’s Kie’Aundria Acree is scoring 30.7 points per game to lead the classification is points totals. … Beach’s Maria Reid is averaging 27.2 points per game while Sandy Creek’s Morghan Reckley tallies 25 points per game. … Luella is paced by Jasmine Baxter, who scores 19.9 points per game and Stone Mountain’s Makayla Wilson averages 19.8 points per game. … Since losing in an upset to No. 10 Dawson County 53-46 on Jan. 14, top-ranked Pickens has beaten Chestatee 56-36, Lumpkin County 87-55 and North Hall 42-39. …
