Tuesday Roundup: Vince Young leads Titans, Stafford out Thursday?

Vince Young remains undefeated during his second stint as Tennessee Titans starting QB as the Titans won their fourth straight game with a 20-17 win over Houston Monday. After starting 0-6, Tennessee made the switch to Vince Young and the team has taken off. Young Monday finished with one passing touchdown but led the team down on the final drive with a 12-yard first down run to set up a 53-yard Rod Bironas game-winning field goal with less than one minute to go. Houston missed a potential game-tying field goal as time expired.

After throwing for a franchise record for passing yards and tying a rookie record for touchdown passes in Detroit’s 38-37 win Sunday, Lions QB Matt Stafford will likely miss this Thursday’s tilt with Green Bay with a sore left shoulder. Coaches said that there is no structural damage to Stafford’s shoulder but it is just sore after Stafford was slammed to the ground on the game’s next to last play. Stafford noted on a weekly radio appearance that he is in “a pretty good amount of pain right now.” Receiver and former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Calvin Johnson is also questionable with a hand and knee injury.

The 6-5 record that Georgia has posted would be considered by most to be a disappointment, however two players have excelled this season: kicker Blair Walsh and punter Drew Butler. Monday both were named finalists for the top national awardat each’s position. Walsh is one of three finalists for the Lou Groza award, given annually to the country’s best placekicker while Butler has a one-in-three shot at the Ray Guy award. Both awards will be handed out with both players in attendance December 10 at the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards show.

Central Gwinnett will be the third Gwinnett County school looking for a new football coach this off-season as CGHS football coach Ed Stokes resigned Monday after a two-year stint. Stokes led the Black Knights to a 5-15 record in his tenure after taking over for Dennis Roland, who retired due to a battle with cancer. Stokes said that he will take some time before deciding upon another coaching job.
