Tuesday Roundup: Vick a non-factor as Eagles win, Kovy out

The Philadelphia Eagles visited the the Nation’s capital last night (well, actually Landover, MD) to face the Washington Redskins in what appeared to be a mismatch from the start. The Eagles sacked and blitzed their way to a 27-17 victory over the Redskins thanks in large part to DeSean Jackson. The second-year receiver took a reverse 67 yards to the house for an early lead, then Jackson got into the endzone again late in the first half on a 57-yard TD reception. Jackson accounted for 136 yards, half of the Eagles total offense. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb was just 15-25 for 156 yards, and he was sacked three times. COnversely, Jason Campbell was 29-43 for 284 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, but he was brought down six times. Both of Campbell’s scores came when the Redskins were down by at least ten or in garbage time. Michael Vick meanwhile played just a handful of snaps in the Wildcat Formation. Vick was 1-1 for five yards passing and ran the ball three times for nine yards. After the game the hits kept coming for Washington as it was revealed that H-Back Chris Cooley broke an ankle and is out indefinitely.

The NHL’s leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after suffering a foot injury over the weekend. The Thrashers captain took a puck off the foot in a loss to San Jose and underwent an MRI yesterday to check the damage. Rookie Evander Kane has taken Kovalchuk’s spot on the top line.

When the NBA tips its season off tonight, one of its bright young stars will not be making his debut. 2009 No.1 overall pick Blake Griffin will miss the game and possibly as much as six weeks after it was revealed that he broke his kneecap in the final exhibition game while dunking. Griffin was averaging 13.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in the preseason. The team originally believed the knee was just sore. The Clippers face the defending NBA champion Lakers tonight.

Finally, many Georgia fans believe wide receiver AJ Green is the best wideout in the country and Monday Green was named one of ten semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top receiver. Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree won the award last season. Green will look to pile on more stats this weekend as he faces No.1 Florida at the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. In Green’s last game, he was held to just three catches, one being a 65-yard touchdown catch.
