Tuesday Roundup: Stafford named starter, Flacons fill practice squad

The Atlanta Falcons named eight players to the team’s practice squad over the Labor Day weekend and two local collegiate stars made the cut. Quarterback DJ Shockley, formerly of the University of Georgia was signed Sunday after spending last season as the team’s No.3 QB as well as former GT defensive tackle Vance Walker. Both players were released after spending the camp with the team as the Falcons had to trim its roster to 53 players.

Down yet again after the first set, 17-year-old Melanie Oudin rallied for a three-set victory and is now on her way to the US Open quarterfinals. The Marietta native knocked off Nadia Petrova 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 and will now face Caroline Wozniacki for the right to go to the semi-finals. Oudin showed no signs of a leg injury which brought her to tears earlier in the tournament and said men’s No.1 seed Roger Federer of Oudin, “I think this is very exciting and very much needed on the women’s side. I thought she’s done very well.”

The Miami Hurricanes earned a big win for The U last night when the Canes survived a last-second throw to the end zone from Christian Ponder and the Florida State Seminoles which was ruled incomplete, allowing Miami to escape with a 38-34 win. The play was reviewed and confirmed that Jarmon Fortson let the pass hit the ground before he snagged it and the efforts of former Lowndes standout Greg Reid were for naught. The freshman averaged 33.3 yards per kick return, intercepted a pass and made three tackles.

When the Detroit Lions open up the 2009 season seeking to end a 17-game losing streak, former Georgia QB Matthew Stafford will line up under center. The Lions open up the year in New Orleans against the Saints and its record-setting QB Drew Brees.

Finally, UGA running back Caleb King will see action this weekend against South Carolina, according to Georgia Head Coach Mark Richt on his weekly radio show. King missed the Dawgs trip to Oklahoma State with a hamstring injury. Richard Samuel started and gained 89 yards on 20 carries.
