Tuesday Roundup: Falcons fall short in New Orleans, Phillies stay alive

Things started so well for the Falcons Monday night in New Orleans as the Falcons took the opening kick and marched 77 yards and dented the scoreboard early 7-0. Then the Saints came marching in. Drew Brees and the offense matched Atlanta’s score and then went on to score 28 points in the first half en route to a 35-27 victory. Jason Elam missed two first half field goals and Falcons QB Matt Ryan threw a pick-six to put his team in a hole entering halftime. The Falcons were able to respond in the second half as Ryan hit Roddy White for a TD to close the gap to 28-21 and another Ryan-to-White toss seemingly tied the game at 28-28. The catch was reviewed and overturned and the Falcons settled for a field goal. The Saints were able to capitalize on several Falcons miscues (a second Ryan INT, a defensive holding call on Mike Peterson) to take a 35-24 lead. The Falcons got a late field goal and recovered an onside kick, but then Ryan was picked off for the third time in the ball game with less than thirty seconds remaining and the Falcons fell to three games back of the Saints in the NFC South standings. Michael Turner rushed for 151 yards and White contributed four catches for 105 yards.

Chase Utley is making his case to be World Series MVP and last night he helped keep the Phillies alive in the 2009 World Series by connecting on two home runs as Philadelphia beat New York 8-6. The Yankees still lead the series three games to two as the series shifts back to New York. Utley crushed a three-run home run in the first and the Phillies never trailed again with that 3-1 advantage. Utley and Ryan Howard would then show patience in the third, each drawing a walk to help push AJ Burnett from the game with a three-run third. Later in the seventh, Utley would tie Reggie Jackson with his fifth home run in the World Series and the Phillies ended up winning despite allowing A-Rod to drive home a few with an RBI double in the eighth, and Derek Jeter would plate a run with a double-play. Ryan Madson closed the game out for the Phillies.

Finally, this Saturday in Athens it will be Joe Cox still in, AJ Green out. Georgia head coach Mark Richt told the media that fifth-year senior Joe Cox will get he start at quarterback despite throwing three second-half interceptions in a 41-17 loss to Florida. Cox was lifted from the game last Saturday in favor of Logan Gray, who threw an interception as well. Meanwhile star receiver AJ Green will miss the game with Tennessee Tech with a bruised lung. Green has six touchdowns on the season and leads the SEC with 44 receptions. Green had three catches for 50 yards against Florida before sustaining the injury.
