Tuesday Roundup: Caray back with Braves, Georgia hoopster gets award

Chip Caray barely had time to metaphorically unpack his boxes from his departure from Turner Sports before he was back with the Braves. Caray, the son of Skip and grandson of Harry, agreed to become the Braves play-by-play man with Fox Sports South and SportSouth and will call 105 games this season with partner Joe Simpson. Last season Caray called 45 games for Peachtree TV. Caray replaces Jon Sciambi, who left for ESPN.

Thanks to 21 points and the courage to play just days after undergoing surgery, the University of Georgia’s Trey Thompkins was named the SEC player of the week. The sophomore hoops standout also notched seven rebounds, two steals, two assists and one block in the Dawgs 70-67 win over Illinois last Saturday. Thompkins hit four free throws in the last 22 seconds to seal the upset win for Georgia. All of this came less than one week after Thompkins had two wisdom teeth removed. Georgia faces Florida Atlantic tomorrow night in Athens.

Two University of Georgia football players were recently noticed and honored by NFL evaluators. Wide receiver AJ Green and punter Drew Butler were named to the Pro Football Weekly All-America team. According to the Athens Banner-Herald, players are recognized based on feedback from NFL evaluators on a player’s “pure talent and contribution to his team.” The team places an extra premium on draft value in the selection process. Texas A&M had two honorable mentions named to the team. Green is expected to play in the Independence Bowl but is practicing right now in a non-contact jersey.

The New York Giants scored on six of the team’s first seven possessions to stomp the Washington Redskins 45-12 to keep the New York’s playoff hopes alive. Eli Manning was 19-26 for 268 and 3 TDs in the win. The Giants (8-6) trail Dallas and Green Bay for the two wild card berths out of the NFC.
