TUESDAY ROUNDUP: Coaching carousel spinning; Ohman signs

The college basketball coaching carousel is busy spinning and the University of Georgia is still standing on the sidelines with a ticket. The University of Kentucky Wildcats and John Calipari are now talking parameters of a contract in the neighborhood of $4-6M/season and if Coach Cal leaves Memphis for SEC country, the Dawgs may lose out on one of its top targets in Missouri’s Mike Anderson. Meanwhile, the University of Virginia grabbed its coach in Tony Bennett. (Not, THIS Tony Bennett, but THIS Tony Bennett.) Finally, Georgia Southern’s basketball coach Jeff Price resigned Monday following an 8-22 season. Over his 10 seasons with the Eagles, Price was 165-133, good enough for third all-time at the school. The coaching search will begin immediately according to school officials.

Any thoughts of the Braves bringing back lefty reliever Will Ohman were dashed yesterday as the Los Angels Dodgers inked the free agent to a minor league deal with an option for 2010. Last season with Atlanta, Ohman was 4-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 83 appearances. Speaking of former Braves, Marcus Giles was cut yesterday from the Philadelphia camp after hitting just .167 this spring. Giles missed all of 2008.

Monday did not bring good news to the University of Georgia football team. First the team found out that one of the top recruits of the 2009 class Austin Long will likely have to redshirt after back surgery, then during the team’s scrimmage, Jeremy Longo “banged up” a shoulder. The extent of his injury is not known at this time.

Finally, the Georgia and Georgia Tech baseball programs maintained their high rankings in the new Collegiate Baseball rankings. Georgia remains No.1 in the poll while Tech registers in at No.3. UGA will participate in a home-and-home today and tomorrow with No. 22 Clemson before hosting a weekend series with No.5 LSU. The Dawgs hope that Rich Poythress stays as hot for the upcoming games as he was last weekend in Tennessee when he went 6-10 with four home runs in the first two games.
