Basketball action continued on Tuesday night across the state as teams close in on the region tournaments. Let’s look at what took place:
For the girls, Class AAA’s Jefferson defeated Region 8 rival Hart County 66-57. Natalia Bolden, a 5-foot-10 freshman point guard, led with 18 points. Livi Blackstock, a 5-7 sophomore guard, scored 17 points. Allianne Clark, a 5-7 sophomore guard, added 12 points for the Dragons. In an upset, Woodville-Tompkins upended previously undefeated Bryan County 59-53 in a Class AA Region 2 game. The Wolverines led 28-25 at the break and, by the end of the third quarter, Woodville stretched the lead to 46-37. With 4:38 left in the game, Woodville was nursing a 52-38 lead as it held off the Redskins. In an evenly matched Class AA Region 3 game, Wheeler County stayed perfect in region play (11-0) as it defeated Dodge County 70-66. The Bulldogs led 19-15 after the first quarter but Dodge would answer with a 18-15 run to make it a 34-33 game at the break. Wheeler County bested the Indians 18-14 in the third quarter to gain a 52-47 lead entering the final frame. Dodge scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, but Wheeler matched 18 points to secure the region win.
For the boys, Richmond Hill defeated Brunswick 50-48 in a Class AAAAAA Region 2 game. Both teams scored 10 points in the first quarter and 14 points in the second quarter to enter the locker room tied at 24. Richmond Hill took a three-point lead with a 15-12 run in the third quarter and matched 11 of Brunswick’s 12 points in the final frame to secure the win. In a Class A Region 1 game, Pelham took a 31-8 lead after the first quarter on the way to a 77-22 victory over Baker County. Pelham led 58-17 at the half. In a Class AAAA Region 3 game, Richmond Academy defeated Cross Creek 55-53. The Musketeers enjoyed a 17-10 lead after the first quarter and a 38-20 lead at the half before Cross Creek charged. The Razorbacks outscored Richmond Academy 33-17 in the second half before time ran out. In a Class AAAA Region 2 game, West Laurens defeated Howard 61-59 after weathering a late-game charge by the Huskies. The Raiders led 8-5 after the first quarter and 22-18 at the break before Howard’s 19-11 run in the third quarter which gave it a 37-33 lead entering the final frame. West Laurens bested the Huskies 28-22 in the final frame to secure the victory.
