The Tucker Lions’ Seventh Grade squad defeated McEachern and Grayson Saturday at Collins Hill High School to capture the Second Annual Sherriff’s Cup. DeKalb County (Tucker), Gwinnett County (Grayson), Cobb County (McEachern) and Fulton County (Cambridge) all squared off for the title and the day started with two one half games before the winners advanced to the finals. Exceptional plays were seen on the field and the community came out to support the event with local Sheriffs in a growing annual initiative that brings attention to anti-gang and anti-bullying causes and provide resources to kids and parents who deal with these issues. PeachtreeTV televised all eight quarters of action with On3′s Rusty Mansell, DawgNation’s Brandon Adams and Atlanta Falcons Vice President of Community Relations Chris Millman calling it from the booth.
Grayson cashed in on a fumble with a Namarion Henry touchdown reception to take a 6-0 lead in the opening game and the Rams iced the 12-0 win with a goal line rushing score with less than two minutes left before the half ended. The next game featured the Tucker Lions and McEachern seventh graders and Jeremiah Tillman got the Lions on the board with a 55-yard rushing touchdown to build a 6-0 lead. On the ensuing McEachern possession, Karter Lumpkin—son of UGA legend Kregg Lumpkin—extended the lead with an interception and 47-yard touchdown return. Karter returned to the endzone in the second half on a 60-yard touchdown run to close out a 20-8 victory.
Grayson waited for the conclusion of the Tucker game and the Lions stayed on the field to play a full four quarter game for the title.
“Our kids battled so much adversity today,” said Lions head coach Aundre Goode. “I want to give our coaches credit and also want to give a special shoutout to Eric Howard. He stepped up before the game and said he was going to make sure we get this victory together. He is a 4.0 student and football IQ is what we preach.”
Howard was stepping up for Aaron Goode, who was battling with a shoulder injury. Howard connected with Eliah Knox for a touchdown right before the half to put the Lions up 6-0. Despite playing six straight quarters, Tucker’s defense held Grayson scoreless and the offense rotated backs to ice the 20-0 win. The final play came with Goode intercepting Grayson and taking a knee as time expired.
Howard was named the MVP of the Sherriff’s cup and received the Most Outstanding Player medallion after the victory.
