Track and Field Recruiting Blog: Stephenson’s Burton commits to Mississippi State; Walton turns to underclassmen after state runner-up finish

The 2025 GHSA Track and Field season will begin in earnest later this month, but there have already been tryouts and early intra-squad meets that have produced noteworthy results. This past week, Walton hosted the Walton Time Trials and Blue and Red Intrasquad Meet and showcased that there is a wealth of underclassmen talent on the boys side that will be bolstering a group that already made history last season with a runner-up finish (55) to Carrollton’s 58.50.

At the meet, sophomore Jack Smith shattered the previous event record of 25.00 with a personal record 23.99 in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Evan Saxon clocked a 24.93 and freshman Christian Govea added a 25.05. In total, Walton had eight runners timed under a 27-second 200-meter dash and all of them were underclassmen.

Smith performed well in the 100-meter dash as well with a personal record 11.73 time and was topped by freshman Aiden Opore—who finished with an 11.5. Both of those times shattered the previous event record. Opore also shined in the long jump with a team-best 20-9 leap. On the girls side, junior Katharine Rogers and senior Sarah Eubank each ran sub 14 seconds in the 100 meter dash with Rogers (13.86) and Eubank (13.97) each finishing with Georgia Top 25 marks.

Walton will host the first of its three Walton Home Meets on Feb. 26 before travelling to the Longhorn Stampede meet on March 1 and competing in the Marietta Quad Meet on March 5. The rest of the schedule includes two more home meets on March 12 and March 19 before the Peachtree Ridge Invitational on March 21 and then the Cobb County Championship Meet at the end of March. Cobb County will have early April reserved for Spring Break and then Walton will be back for the Walton Post-Spring Break Rust Buster on April 16 in the final event before the Region tournament at Marietta (April 21-15), the Sectionals on May 3 and then the State Championships May 9-10.

Weather forced the cancellation of several events slated for this week, including Seckinger’s first home meet that was scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 20. Grayson’s Home Meet was cancelled on Wednesday and the Raising Cane’s Distance Dash was unable to compete this past weekend at Clarke Central.

Holy Innocents’ will have their Time Trial Meet Thursday night and Wesleyan will host Lovett for a dual meet Thursday night in Norcross. Westlake will host the 2025 Westlake Showcase on Friday and that field of teams will include Chamblee, Drew Charter, Eagle’s Landing, Douglass, Konos Academy, Lithonia, MLK, McDonough, McEachern, Miller Grove, Sandy Creek, Tri-Cities and Utopian Academy in addition to Westlake.

Since the start of the Spring Semester, several big names in Track and Field have announced their commitments. Stephenson’s Todd Burton committed to Mississippi State University. Last year, Stephenson and Tucker tied for the DeKalb County Track and Field Title 126-126. During that meet, Burton made history by running a 46.92 in the 400-meter dash and broke the 27-year old record of 46.98 held by Southwest DeKalb’s Eddie Miller from 1987. Decatur’s Sam Corso announced his commitment to Western Carolina recently and Langston Hughes’ Martavius Griffin committed to Milligan University to star in the mid-distance and distance events.
