The University of North Florida hosted the Bob Hayes High School Invitational on March 15 and staged a meet with a total 74 schools. Florida had 66 schools participating, Beaufort gave South Carolina one school and then seven Georgia schools joined the competition. This included Brunswick, Camden County, Glynn Academy, Langston Hughes, South Effingham, Thomas County Central and Union County. Elite performances were witnessed throughout the showcase and at the top of that list was Langston Hughes’ senior Maurice Gleaton. The Georgia track and field signee and sprint specialist is already having a banner senior campaign. While running on the Panthers’ state-championship-winning 4×100 relay team earlier this month at the MTFXCCGA Invitational at Archer High School, Gleaton and the relay team clocked a 40.39—marking the fastest time in the country so far this season.
Gleaton clocked a 10.14 in the 100 meter as a sophomore—which was the fastest time in Georgia history. He had another all-state junior season and is coming off a tremendous football season for Hughes where he showcased the potential to be one of the top wide receiver prospects in the country. His potential as a sprinter, however, is so high that should he focus on just running track for the Bulldogs he has a chance to be a national champion and future Olympic medalist.
This past weekend, Gleaton hit another all-time Georgia milestone at the Bob Hayes Invitational—winning the 100 meter dash with a blazing 10.01. His teammate Carsyn Baker—a Class of 2026 running back that is 6-foot-2, 200 pounds finished second in the field with a 10.63. Gleaton’s 10.01 time gives him the best 100 meter run in the country so far this season. In the 200 meter race, Gleaton clocked a 20.52 as a sophomore, which was a school-record and the state’s fastest time all year. This past weekend, he finished first with a 20.64—topping the second place time of 21.32. His teammate Thomas Fitzgerald—a junior—finished first in the 110 meter hurdles with a 13.97 and third in the 400 meter hurdles with a 54.05. The 4×100 relay team took first with a 40.95 finish and Hughes also won the 4×400 meter relay at the Bob Hayes Invitational with a 3:18.05 finish. Hughes’ Christian Langford took first place in the long jump with a 7.24 meter jump.
