Track and Field: Druid Hills sends 10 to state sectionals

Druid Hills will be well represented in the state sectionals this weekend as 10 athletes will compete in the State Track Sectional B at Tift County. The girls finished fourth overall in the Region 2-AAAAAA meet with 75 points. Luella came in first place followed by Newton and Rockdale County. Paulette Juieng led the Druid Hills girls, finishing first in the 1600-meter run and second in the 3200-meter run.

Gabrielle Buckley came in second in the 100-meter hurdles and third in the 300-meter hurdles. Teammate Shari Brown came in third in the 100 meter hurdles and Shameeka McInnis came in third in the discus throw. Rounding out the girls qualifiers for the state sectionals is Kegan Peppers, who finished fourth in the 100-meter dash.

For the Druid Hills boys, the team finished sixth overall with 53 points with Rockdale County winning the Region 2-AAAAAA title. The top finisher for Druid Hills was Ermais Tewolde with a third-place finish in the 3200-meter run. The other qualifiers for the state sectionals were Hasaan Enis, Kuenley Tsheowang and Javier Lee. Enis came in fourth place in the 100-meter run, Tsheowang finished fourth in the pole vault and Lee finished fourth in the shot put.

The Region 4-AAAAAA championships took place on Saturday and both Marietta boys and girls took home first-place finishes.

The girls won six events including Nyasiah Mercado in the 800-meter run, Mary Jeanne Assinzo in the 1,600-meter run, Nia Seldon in the shot put and Asia-Blu Wilson in the discus throw.

The boys only won two events but had other athletes finish in the Top eight in numerous events.

KirVonte’ Benson won the long jump while Jack Henderson claimed the 1,600-meter run and edged Kennesaw Mountain’s Jacob Roberson by .47 seconds in the 3,200-meter run.
