Top defensive backs make their pledges to college

This weekend saw some of the best defensive backs in the state come off the board as one from Marietta decided to go out west and commit to Arizona State. The other star from Jonesboro flipped from the Georgia Bulldogs to the Miami Hurricanes. See below for more on the prospects.

Kell, DB, Jalen Williams - Williams committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils. He chose Arizona State over NC State, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, and Ole Miss. He detailed his decision of why he chose the Sun Devils with On3′s Chad Simmons.

“One of the biggest reasons why I chose them was how I related best to Coach Dillingham and the entire staff. They showed the most genuine love, and they really prioritized me. I like how they have a plan for me too.”

Arizona State is a program creating more buzz, especially after making the College Football Playoff, losing a double-overtime thriller to the Texas Longhorns. Coach Dillingham led the Sun Devils to a Big 12 Championship after they were predicted to finish last in the conference. Other recruits and Williams have taken notice, and Arizona State has a Top-20 class per 247Sports.

Williams is another standout the program has landed. In his junior season with Kell, he finished with 39 tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, and a blocked field goal. One of his best games came in a victory over Wheeler. He finished with a season-high nine tackles and an interception. Williams is part of a talented secondary that also includes 3-star safety Tony Forney.

Jonesboro, DB, Jontavius Wyman - There were rumors that this could be a possibility and has been building up for the past few months, with more visits scheduled to Miami for Wyman. He visited a few weeks ago and will be back in Miami next weekend. Wyman made it official on Saturday, declaring he had flipped to the Hurricanes. Here is more on that decision via Steve Wiltfong of On3.

“I just felt like everything going on that’s the school I see myself playing at,” Wyman said. “The culture, I love the coaches, facilities and how that program carries itself in general. The standard.”

It is a huge get for the Hurricanes. Miami is getting a potential shutdown corner at the next level, a guy who is long and athletic and an absolute ballhawk. Wyman is a two-way star for the Jonesboro Cardinals. Per MaxPreps, on offense, Wyman finished with 34 catches for 506 yards and seven touchdowns this past season. On defense, he finished with 32 tackles, three pass deflections, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He was also named an all-classification player by Score Atlanta this year, in addition to many accolades for the star player. He helped lead the Cardinals to a second-round finish in 2024 and will be looking to make a deep run with a star-studded cast in 2025.

It will be interesting to see how the Miami secondary looks in 2025. It was an area of concern for the Hurricanes in 2024. Miami had a dynamic offense but couldn’t get stops defensively, which led to high-scoring shootouts and come-from-behind victories for the Hurricanes. Wyman is a big step in helping to sure up that secondary.
