Holiday hoops tournaments have been taking place across the state as Georgia high school basketball is quickly becoming as must-see as the Peach State’s prep football. Teams from Georgia have been ranked nationally by ESPN and USA Today, and several programs have ventured out to compete in various national tournaments. One holiday tournament though that is certain to draw the eyes of the nation is Centennial’s Hoops In Overdrive Shoot-Out. The two-day event, which begins Friday, has a host of ranked schools from Georgia squaring off against one another as well as against quality teams from across the Southeast. Marquee players from Georgia will also be on display, including Score 44 mainstay Robert Carter of Shiloh.
The action tips off Friday at 2:00 p.m. as Faith Baptist (Fla.) takes on Christian Faith (N.C.). Host Centennial plays Lee High School, ranked No. 2 in Alabama’s Class AAAAAA. Score Atlanta Class AAAA No. 6 Jonesboro faces Rockdale County, ranked earlier this season though currently unranked, at 7:00 p.m. Shiloh, the No. 1 team in the Class AAAAA poll faces Alabama power Carver-Montgomery, ranked No. 5 in Class AAAAA.
The action truly heats up on Day Two when Class AA No. 5 Morgan County meets Lee High School, followed later in the day by Wenonah (Ala.) taking on Lovejoy. Wenonah is the top team in Alabama’s highest classification. Lovejoy is no slouch as the Wildcats are currently ranked No. 5 in Class AAAA. In the early evening Mary Persons faces Class AAAA No. 8 Osborne and the event is capped off with Shiloh facing Rockdale County.
If it is superstars you are after, this event certainly has star power. Brannen Greene, a 6-foot-7 small forward, is just a junior, but the Mary Persons star has already pledged to play for Kansas. Shiloh’s Carter is one of the Big Three of the Class of 2012 and is headed to Georgia Tech next year. His sophomore teammate Trayvon Reed is already listed as ESPN’s No. 22 player in the Class of 2014. Another sophomore C.J. Thurman of Morgan County stands 6-foot-8 and will only be a “sleeper” for so long.
