Thursday football and softball scores

On the football field, the Tucker Tigers soundly defeated Mt. Zion-Jonesboro 57-0 to picked up their sixth region win of the season. They remain undefeated in class AAAAAA region 4. The Newton Rams put up a 20-point first-half performance while shutting out Shiloh to create a comfortable lead. The Generals reached the end zone twice in the second half but were unable to collect enough points to overtake the lead. Clarke Central’s Isaac Ward started off the Gladiators game against Johnson-Gainesville with an unusual play, catching his own pass for a 63-yard score. Ward struck again in the second quarter with a 44-yard pass to Sophomore Jarius Mack before O’Brien Barnett punched one in from four yards out to continue the scoring spree. With one second left on the clock, Ward connected with Junior Jordan Hill on a 42-yard touchdown to take a commanding 27-0 lead at the half. The Gladiators continued to roll in the second half with two rushing touchdowns from Zyon Rushad and Tyrek Lumpkin, along with a defense score from Kevin Gresham and an end-of-game 48-yard score from Quay Teasley.

On the softball diamond, class AAAAAAA defending champs East Coweta narrowly defeated Grayson 2-1 to advance to the next round where they’ll face off tomorrow against Mill Creek. Class AAAAAA defending champs Allatoona soundly defeated Houston County 9-2 to advance to the second round. The two have gone head-to-head three times already this season, with Allatoona getting strong wins with scores of 14-1 and 6-2. Dalton claimed the last game though, holding the Buccaneers to just three runs while putting up six. After advancing all the way to last year’s class AAAA finals, Northside-Columbus was on the wrong end of a close 7-6 game against Heritage-Catoosa to send the Patriots to the loser’s bracket.
