As the GHSA football playoffs approach, region title races are coming into focus. However a handful of regions are still uncertain, with four or more teams still fighting for a region championship.
Region 1-6A is one of the biggest question marks in the state heading into the last three weeks of the season, with Lowndes, Richmond Hill, Valdosta, and Colquitt County all tied for first place with a 2-1 region record. Last week, it appeared Valdosta was going to run away with the region, but a shocking 35-14 loss to Richmond Hill threw the region into chaos. Richmond Hill is now the only team without a loss to any of the top four teams, meaning if they win out, they will be region champions.
The other three can win the region in very simple ways. Valdosta can win the region if they win out and Richmond Hill loses any game. Colquitt County needs to win out and for Valdosta to lose a game to win the region. Lowndes needs to win out and a Colquitt County loss to claim the region title.
Region 6-6A is the other 6A region that remains unclear.
While the top four teams of West Forsyth, Lambert, and Denmark who are all 4-1 in the region, and North Atlanta who is 5-0, are likely set, the order is still uncertain. North Atlanta controls its own destiny, being undefeated in region play, but must still face both West Forsyth and Denmark. Lambert can win the region if they win out and North Atlanta loses its final two games. West Forsyth can win the region with a victory over North Atlanta and a Lambert loss. While Denmark can win the region if they win out and West Forsyth loses one of its final two games.
Region 2-5A is a bit more clear, but still has potential for late-season troubles.
For Lee County, the path is simple, a win this week against Northside-Warner Robins guarantees them no worse than a three-way tie for first place. A win over Houston County or a Houston County loss to Thomas County Central, combined with a Lee County win this week, will give the Trojans the region title. Thomas County Central could win the region by winning out and Lee County losing both its remaining games. Coffee can win the region outright if they win out and Lee County loses its final two games. Houston County needs to win out and for Thomas County Central to beat Coffee in the final week of the season to come away with the region crown.
Region 1-4A is another region that could see chaos.
Perry is currently the front-runner with a 3-0 record in region play but has to finish the season against both Benedictine and Warner Robins. Benedictine is the second most likely to win the region title; they can do that with wins over Perry and Warner Robins, along with any loss from Ware County. Warner Robins also has a clear path to the title needing only to win out and for Benedictine to lose to either Perry or New Hampstead. Ware County can also win the region if they win out and Perry loses its final two games of the season.
