The 2008 SEC football season in 24 questions

The SEC holds its media day this week, and the head coaches are all gathered in Birmingham, Ala., to take part in the festivities. With the media set to make their prediction on who will be the standout teams and players in the conference this year, I thought this would be the perfect time to look at some burning questions for each team.

Alabama

No. 1 Question: Will new offensive coordinator Jim McElwain finally be the guy to put a consistent offense on the field?

A Close Second: Will McElwain fail, forcing Commander Saban to recruit Joint Chief of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen for the job next season?

Arkansas

No. 1 Question: How long will it take for players used to running the ball a lot adjust to the passing gameplan of new head coach Bobby Petrino?

A Close Second: How long will it take for Petrino’s agent to start fielding offers for higher paying and larger profile jobs?

Auburn

No. 1 Question: Will a quarterback emerge to run the Tigers’ version of the spread offense?

A Close Second: Will Petrino emerge from the locker room to meet Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville when the Tigers host the Razorbacks on Oct. 11?

Florida

No. 1 Question: When will a young but talented defense mature and reach its potential?

A Close Second: When will the defensive coaches resort to Plan B and start Superman Tim Tebow at all 11 positions?

Georgia

No. 1 Question: How will a new placekicker react to kicking in front of 92,000 fans every week?

A Close Second: How will Uga VII react to sitting in front of 92,000 fans every week?

Kentucky

No. 1 Question: Will Rich Brooks’ team prove they were more than Andre Woodson and go bowling once again?

A Close Second: Will head basketball coach Billy Gillispie get fired if Brooks’ team doesn’t?

LSU

No. 1 Question: Will quarterbacks Jarrett Lee or Andrew Hatch cause opposing teams half as many problems as the departed Ryan Perrilloux would have?

A Close Second: Will Lee and Hatch combined cause their own team as many problems as Perrilloux did?

Mississippi State

No. 1 Question: Will the Bulldogs match their surprising 2007 season by winning eight games once again?

A Close Second: If so, will the Bulldogs offense score a touchdown in any of those eight games?

Ole Miss

No. 1 Question: Can quarterback Jevan Snead play up to his talent in his first season as the starter?

A Close Second: Can former coach Ed Orgeron continue to coach down the Rebels in his first season away from the team?

South Carolina

No. 1 Question: Are the Gamecocks quarterbacks finally comfortable enough with Steve Spurrier’s offense to run it effectively?

A Close Second: Is Spurrier finally comfortable enough with the quarterbacks to settle on just one?

Tennessee

No. 1 Question: Will former Richmond head coach and new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson eventually be a David Cutcliffe instead of a Randy Sanders?

A Close Second: Will the current Duke coach and ex-offensive coordinator Cutcliffe eventually be a better Phil Fulmer than Phil Fulmer?

Vanderbilt

No. 1 Question: Will another competitive season convince anyone that has not noticed that Bobby Johnson is a fantastic coach?

A Close Second: Will a non-competitive season convince the school to dissolve the football program and reassign Johnson and his assistants to the staff of the highly successful women’s bowling team?
