Tech wins at Boston College

The Yellow Jackets dispelled many doubters today by going up to Chestnut Hill and capturing a 19-16 victory over Boston College. However, Tech’s second win of the season (first win in ACC competition) was not a thing of beauty. Instead Tech gutted out a mistake-filled affair with three turnovers on both sides, including a fumble on a punt by Tyler Melton.

Football observers, both causal and hardcore, will note that the best way to win an ugly game is with timely big plays and stout defense. The Jackets had both. With 8:26 remaining in the game, Jonathan Dwyer torched the Eagles with a 43-yard touchdown that proved to be the game winner. Dwyer finished the game with 108 yards, his second 100-yard game of the season. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt, who had one of Tech’s three fumbles in the first half, iced the game on Tech’s final drive with a 30-yard run and a critical fourth-down-and-inches conversion.

While Dwyer and Nesbitt will receive deserved praise, the real star of the game was the defense. When Tech’s level of competition increased, so did their effort. The Jackets gave up just 262 total yards, and registered two interceptions and a fumble. They also harassed BC quarterback Chris Crane all afternoon, with Vance Walker sacking him in the end zone for a safety five plays before Dwyer’s touchdown. BC’s only touchdown came when Ifeanyi Momah snatched the ball away from Jahi Word-Daniels in the end zone.

A major conference game was won on Saturday afternoon, but equally important for Tech, confidence was gained. The Yellow Jackets know now that they can go on the road and beat a formidable opponent. They also know now that the offense and defense can come up with big plays when needed. Their newfound confidence should carry them as the season progresses.
