Stars clinch first-ever state title

Providence Christian clinched the Class A baseball state championship series Friday with an 11-1 victory over host Charlton County in Game 3. The contest was halted in the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Stars exploded for six first-inning runs on five hits, as Austin Golden, Josh Carter, Austin Smith, Steven Slaughter and Max Broom all had RBIs. Golden struck again in the second with a three-run homer and an RBI single in the third to push the Providence Christian edge to 10-0 after three.

Charlton County scored one in the fifth, but the Stars scored in the top of the sixth to regain the 10-run edge.

It is the first boys state title in any sport for Providence Christian.
