The Buford Wolves are once again making the argument that they are the best softball team in the state of Georgia regardless of classification. While Kennesaw Mountain is clearly the big horse in Class AAAAAA, there is no ignoring the success of Buford.
Buford is cruising through the early part of the 2013 season with a perfect record in Region 7-AAA and has beaten traditional Gwinnett and state powers such as Archer (defending champion in AAAAAA), Mill Creek and Brookwood already this year. The Wolves have allowed more than three runs just two times this season despite playing a rigorous schedule. They have also outscored their opponents 92-18 this fall. Buford is positioning itself perfectly for an unprecedented seventh state championship in a row.
Kennesaw Mountain was handed its first loss Tuesday night by Lassiter 5-4. The Mustangs were dominant in their own right until the loss. Kennesaw Mountain’s success is largely due to pitching and defense. In their 13 victories, the Mustangs have shut out opponents or allowed only one run in eight games. Only Lassiter and Chapel Hill (six runs in extra innings) have scored more than three runs in a game against the Trojans.
A team to watch in Class AAAAA is Heritage-Conyers. The Patriots are cruising along with a recent championship at the Battle at the Beach. Heritage-Conyers blanked North Forsyth 6-0 in the final and has already beaten top teams from across the state in 2013, including Vidalia, a ranked AA team. For good measure on Tuesday, the Patriots pasted Cedar Shoals from Class AAAAA 20-0.
