SEC Basketball Tournament returning to Atlanta, Thrashers ink draft pick, and McClure going nowhere

Good news college basketball fans. The Southeastern Conference announced on Wednesday that both its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will return to the metro Atlanta area in the coming years.

The Georgia Dome will play host to the men’s tournament in 2014 while the Gwinnett Arena will be the site of the women’s tournament in 2010, 2013 and 2014.

Also on Wednesday, Nashville was awarded the 2011 and 2012 women’s tournament, along with 2013 for men. The men’s tournament had previously been awarded to Nashville for 2010 and New Orleans for 2012, while the Georgia Dome was previously the site of 2011 men’s event.

THRASHERS MAKING MOVES…

The Atlanta Thrashers made some noise late Tuesday, signing forward Andrew Kozek, the team’s second-round selection (53rd overall) in the 2005 NHL Draft.

Now 23, Kozek had 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 38 games last season for the University of North Dakota. In 167 career games at North Dakota, he compiled a total of 65 points (38 goals, 27 assists).

Following the end of his collegiate season, the 5-foot-11, 195-pounder joined the Thrashers’ AHL affiliate in Chicago. He appeared in five games with the Wolves, scoring two goals.

 NOT FINISHED YET…

Atlanta Falcons center Todd McClure wants to make something clear, he’s not retiring. After an offseason of internet rumors and speculation, thanks in part to the Wednesday free agent signing of former all-pro center Jeremy Newberry, Todd McClure just wants the rumors laid to rest. When asked by D.Orlando Ledbetter of the AJC if he was retiring McClure responded, “No man, I’ve got a contract. I’ve been here. I haven’t missed a day of OTAs — mini-camps or nothing. I’m as fired up as I’ve ever been about being a Falcon right now. This is an exciting season that we’ve got coming up.”

McClure has been the anchor of an offensive line that has led the NFL in rushing three times since he was drafted in the seventh round in 1999. McClure added, “I’m going to play until the wheels fall off. I’m going to play until I get 31 noes(from other teams).”

 GIVING BACK…

In other Falcons news, members of the team, including Glen Sharp, Eric Brock and Jamal Fudge, used Wednesday to visit with the patients of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes-Spalding. The athletes and patients played with toys and participated in card games while the players signed autographs for all in attendance.

The visit was part of a joint effort by the NFL and the “Live United” campaign to help promote the voice of the United Way in the local Atlanta community.

 DOGS BITE BACK…

Ask any UGA fan; mess with a bulldog and you’ll get the bulldog bite. Former Braves pitcher and current Royals reliever Kyle Farnsworth learned that the hard way Wednesday when attempting to break up a fight between his two pets bulldogs. Farnsworth had to get four stitches after the incident. Fortunately for the Royals, it was on his non-pitching hand. Farnsworth has posted a 3.43 ERA in 23 relief appearances this season.
