This week, when No. 6 Brookstone travels to Schley County, the Region 4-A crown will be on the line. The Cougars (9-0, 8-0) are coming off a recent thumping of Central-Talbotton on Senior Night. It was another big night for Milton McCluskey, as he ran for 119 yards and one score just one week after finding paydirt twice against Webster County in a 58-0 victory. In that game, Brewton McCluskey and E.J. Schwan also reached the end zone twice. The defense, which held Webster to 43 total yards on offense, managed to hold Central-Talbotton to just six points.
Brookstone’s defense will look to bottle up the Wildcats’ playmakers, Deondrick Pina and Carmetrick Ross. In a win over Marion County, Pina had a touchdown run and another score on a reception, while Ross has been getting it done on a regular basis over the last few weeks. Ross had two scores against both Pacelli and Stewart-Quitman, and posted over 150 yards rushing in both games.
It is Schley County’s defense, however, that makes the Wildcats (7-2, 7-1) tick. Trae Mann and Tyler Tondee fly to the ball for head coach Jim McFather, and sophomore Darius Pines plays far older than his age. He had two fumble recoveries against Marion and he shares the team’s lead in sacks with a newcomer to the defensive line, Tony Lizarraga. This defense has shut down running attacks before—Marion County’s Allen McKay entered the contest as the region’s leading rusher and only averaged 3.95 yards per carry against the Schley defense—and the Wildcats will look to contain McCluskey in hopes of a win.
