Sandy Creek DB Chase Usher’s stock is trending up and colleges are taking notice. He finished his junior year with 20 tackles, six pass deflections, and a fumble recovery. Those numbers led him to be named to the Region 2-3A all-region team, marking the second selection of his career. He was also named to the Fayette County all-county first team.
“It’s a great feeling. It just shows that hard work pays off. I work hard in season and off-season,” Usher said.
One of his best games of the season came against rival East Coweta, a team Sandy Creek has seen a lot of over the past few years. It was a game where Usher finished with three pass deflections and several tackles.
“My favorite thing about my junior year was beating our rival East Coweta in week 1,” said Usher.
When you roll his tape, you see that he is a very talented cover corner with exceptional ball skills. He is very technically sound and possesses great footwork. He closes in on the ball at the right moment, dislodging it free for incompletions. He is also a good tackler in space, especially 1on1. He is a true lockdown corner that can matchup against any receiver in any coverage.
In terms of his recruiting he is still building relationships with programs especially with so many new ones coming in. Since February, he has picked up offers from UNC Charlotte, Troy, App State, and Sacramento State.
“It’s a blessing honestly. I worked so hard and now it’s all paying off. With recent offers, everything is fresh so I plan to gain a close relationship on the Junior day visits coming up. Last summer I went to a West Virginia camp and Coach Bell (the cornerbacks coach at UNC Charlotte) and I built a relationship there so me and him are pretty close,” said Usher.
Usher is set to visit Troy, App State, UNC Charlotte, Tulsa, and USF this spring. There are no official dates for the visits yet, but these are the programs he plans to take trips to. With all the offers coming in, Usher has his mind on getting better and improving his craft. His technique is what makes him a high-end player. He has his mind on big goals in 2025 and wants to make some noise.
“My work ethic separates me. Nobody works harder than me. Also, my technique is top-notch. I want to be named all-state and I want to bring home a state championship. I’m also working on getting faster this offseason so I got a personal speed trainer and I’m running track this season as well,” he said.
Usher is just scratching the surface of his potential and how good he can be. He will be a key defensive player returning for the Sandy Creek Patriots in 2025 in their hopes of making a deep playoff run.
