Traditional power Roswell will face-off against Mill Creek, the state’s biggest school, in the first installment of the “Drive for the GHSA State Title’’ on PeachtreeTV Friday night in the first round of the GHSA playoffs.
Kickoff on PeachtreeTV will be at 8 p.m. and the game will be played at Roswell’s Ray Manus Stadium.
PeachtreeTV is no stranger to high school football this season. The sister station of CBS46 and the original SuperStation, PeachtreeTV also plays host to both the Corky Kell Classic and Great Atlanta Bash.
Brought to you by GeorgiaConstructionCareers.com, the game will be a rematch of last year’s second-round playoff game when the Hawks knocked off the Hornets 41-17 at Roswell. It is the only time the two schools have played. Mill Creek, with 3,651 students, began playing football in 2008 while Roswell, with 2,232 students, has been around since 1950.
Roswell (7-2) captured the No. 2 seed from Region 5 in Class 7A and is coming off a 42-12 victory over Woodstock. The Hornets, ranked as high as No. 5 in the classification this season, have advanced to the playoffs in the past seven seasons and made the championship game in 2015 and 2016. Chris Prewett is in his first year as head coach at Roswel1.
Mill Creek (5-5), the No. 3 seed from Region 8, has had perhaps the toughest regular season schedule in the state, facing six ranked opponents including 7A No. 1 Grayson (20-13 loss) and four region winners (Grayson, West Forsyth, Norcross, Collins Hill). The Hawks are coming off a 40-3 victory over Peachtree Ridge and nine of the 10 teams on their schedule made the playoffs. Last season in coach Josh Lovelady’s inaugural season leading Mill Creek, the Hawks advanced to the quarterfinals, losing to state champion Marietta.
Veteran play-by-play announcer Paul Crane and Rusty Mansell of 247Sports will be in the booth to call the game while Ashley Rose will host the pregame and halftime shows with former Brookwood football coach and athletics director Dave Hunter. Score Atlanta chief high school editor Craig Sager II will be giving updates on games from around the state from the Score Atlanta studios. Also, Kaylee Mansell will be handling out Georgia Elite Classic invites during halftime and will help on the sidelines.
