Richard Morgan announced decision to step down as Marietta football’s head coach

Richard Morgan, the architect behind Marietta’s first state championship since 1967, has announced he is stepping down from his role as the head football coach of the Blue Devils.

GPB’s Matt Stewart was the first to announce the coaching move on X.

During his time leading the Marietta football program, Morgan amassed a record of 42-64, including the school’s first football state championship in over 50 years in 2019.

Morgan brought relevancy to Marietta football and made the school a contender for the postseason again, only missing the playoffs in his first season with the school, the only time throughout his tenure.

The former Blue Devils head coach arrived at Marietta in 2016 after leaving Oscar Smith High School in Virginia. After spending a few years with the Tigers, winning two state championships, Morgan took the Marietta job, where he was able to bring some success from Virginia down to Georgia.

Along with winning a state championship in 2019, Morgan led Marietta back to the quarterfinals for the first time in 23 years in 2017 and was able to climb over the hump two years later to win the state championship.

The 2019 Marietta state championship team featured multiple NFL players such as former Troy Trojans player and current Los Angeles Chargers running back, Kimani Vidal, along with former LSU Tiger and current Arizona Cardinals linebacker, B.J. Ojulari. Other top recruits such as Arik Gilbert, Harrison Bailey and a handful more made up one of the best Georgia high school football teams in recent memory.
