RECRUITING BUZZ: Who’s left on the board for Georgia’s Big Three?

With National Signing Day just hours away, schools are doing their best to put the finishing touches on their classes. Whether it is through losing commitments or gaining commitments over the weekend, Georgia State, Georgia Tech and Georgia boast different levels of momentum heading into National Signing Day.

Georgia State

Georgia State has had the best week out of the three schools leading up to Wednesday, as the Panthers landed four recruits in the past week. The highlight of the week was landing Pensacola Catholic defensive back LaDarion Young. Young’s willingness to hit and 4.6 speed will be a nice addition to Georgia State’s secondary. According to ESPN’s Corey Long, “the future direction of the program was a huge selling point” for the defensive back.

The Panthers currently have 21 commits in this year’s class and are looking to build on last year’s 3-8 season. They have done a good job of recruiting the region, especially the state of Georgia. Of their 21 commits, 14 are from the state of Georgia. The Panthers might sit tight with their 21 commits come Signing Day, but there are some recruits that still hold offers to watch. Linebacker Jatavis Brown, offensive lineman Callan Gillison and defensive end Samuel Batiste remain uncommitted and are still considering Georgia State.

Georgia Tech

The last week of January was a very turbulent one for the Yellow Jackets. The Jackets tried to keep defensive back Antonio Crawford from visiting Miami over the weekend and went as far as threatening to pull his scholarship offer to do so. However, Crawford ended up visiting Miami and soon after, committing to the Hurricanes. Crawford wasn’t the only Tech commit to visit another school over the weekend. Offensive lineman Will Adams decided to visit Auburn over the weekend after hearing Georgia Tech’s co-offensive line coach may not return to the team next season. Upon returning from his Auburn visit, Adams told Michael Carvell of the AJC that, “I’m still committed to Georgia Tech, we’re back from Auburn and we’re talking things over.”

Georgia Tech currently has 16 commitments after losing Crawford and are hoping to add to that number come tomorrow afternoon. One of the biggest names left on the Jacket’s board is DT Dalvin Tomlinson. Tomlinson is believed to be leaning towards signing with the Jackets but is also considering both Alabama and Georgia. He will announce his decision tomorrow morning. After taking a visit to Auburn, Will Adams has become so torn between Tech and Auburn that some recruiting services do not have him listed as a Tech commit. Adams will make his final decision tomorrow between the two and it is not known which way he is leaning towards at the moment. Georgia Tech is also in the running for three-star linebacker Beau Hankins. Hankins was able to visit Tech over the weekend and received an offer during the trip. He shut his recruitment down after the visit and will decide between Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Penn State, Stanford, Central Florida and Wake Forest.

Georgia

The Bulldogs started off the week in a good way last night, when they received word that Memphis DB Sheldon Dawson will be a Bulldog next fall. Dawson is a huge addition to Mark Richt’s class, as he is the first defensive back in the class. Georgia is viewed as one of the hottest teams coming into National Signing Day after receiving the commitments of DE-LB Jordan Jenkins and RB Todd Gurley. The Bulldogs did however lose a commit, OL Chester Brown, last week due to an issue with the state’s immigration policy.

Mark Richt currently has 17 commits in this year’s class and has five and four-star players left on the board. Georgia’s class is seen as one of the best in the country and will only improve if Richt adds some of the nation’s top undecided players. One of these coveted players is LB Josh Harvey-Clemons from Lowndes. Harvey-Clemons has been ranked by some as the best player in the state of Georgia for the 2012 class and a top 20 player in the country. He is believed to be deciding between Florida State and Georgia, with Georgia holding the lead. After losing OL Chester Brown, the Bulldogs are in need of more offensive lineman for this class. They have their sights set on Palm Beach Gardens OT Avery Young and Cedar Grove OL Brandon Greene. Avery Young has kept his intentions close to the vest but is known to be deciding between Florida, Georgia and Auburn. Some believe that Young will choose Auburn due to the fact that unlike Florida and Georgia, Auburn does not have a premier offensive line commit in this class. Only time will tell.

Brandon Greene is committed to Alabama but has been feeling the heat from Georgia. Both schools have sent him letters of intent and he will make his decision tomorrow morning. The Bulldogs are also in the running for two four-star receivers, JUCO prospect Cordarrelle Patterson and Sandy Creek’s Ja’Quay Williams. Patterson has remained quiet throughout his recruiting process but is thought to be a Georgia lean. Williams, on the other hand, is committed to Auburn but has thrown the coaches from both schools for a loop. No one knows who he will pick after making a surprise visit to Auburn over the weekend, but he will make his intentions tomorrow morning. Another recruit to watch out for is DE-LB Josh Dawson out of Tucker, GA. Dawson is the prized commit in Vanderbilt’s class but is torn between the two schools, thanks to the recruiting efforts of Todd Grantham and Rodney Garner.
