The state of Georgia is home to an enormous amount of talented football recruits. Every year, coaches from across the country try to pillage the state of its talent to better their football programs. As National Signing days nears, coaches are seeking to put the exclamation point on their 2012 recruiting classes. There is still talent to be had in the state of Georgia, and some of that talent lies in the metro Atlanta. The recruits listed below are some of the area’s best uncommitted recruits along with those that are wavering on their commitments.
DT Dalvin Tomlinson, Henry County High School, McDonough, GA
Tomlinson’s recruitment heated up during the month of January with UGA, Georgia Tech, and Alabama trying to get the big man on campus. He was thought to be a Georgia Tech lean a week ago because of the belief that Alabama did not have a spot for him and the decision not to visit Athens. However, his recruiting took an interesting turn last week. Rumors started swirling that Alabama had a scholarship open for him and soon after that, Tomlinson said that he had made his decision. He will announce his decision between the three schools on Wednesday at 8:30 am.
LB Khalid Henderson, Pebblebrook High School, Austell, GA
Henderson committed to the University of Tennessee early in his recruitment but that no longer remains true. After backing off his commitment, he took visits to the University of Central Florida, Kentucky, and Ole Miss. This past weekend, Henderson took a visit to see Kentucky and narrowed his choices to Ole Miss and Kentucky. Both schools appear to good chances of signing the linebacker, but Kentucky is thought to be in the lead after an impressive visit.
S Jordan Moore, Martin Luther King High School, Lithonia, GA
Unlike the rest of his peers, Jordan Moore’s recruitment started a little differently. Moore was originally committed to LSU on a track scholarship and didn’t think much of playing football. However, Moore started playing safety due to an injury and saw his recruitment take off soon after that. After taking different visits, Moore has narrowed his choices down to TCU and Auburn. He was impressed by what both schools have to offer, but the momentum might lie with Auburn after an in-home visit late last week.
WR Ja’Quay Williams, Sandy Creek High School, Tyron, GA
Williams has been committed to Auburn for quite some time but has spent the month of January wavering on where to play collegiate football. Georgia turned up the heat on Williams and has him seriously considering playing for the Bulldogs. Ja’Quay left Athens two weekends ago thoroughly impressed with the Bulldogs and at that point, was thought to be leaning towards Georgia. Auburn Gene Chizik greeted Williams at school the next day to try and reaffirm the wideout’s commitment. Refusing to back down, Georgia coach Mark Richt, along with an entourage of his assistants, traveled to Sandy Creek late last week for a final visit. Georgia’s visit gave the school a lead in the race for Williams because it was his last visit. However, his recruitment took another turn as he went to Auburn this past weekend unexpectedly. Williams has taken everyone along on his roller coaster recruitment and will finally pick between the two schools on signing day.
RB Justin Taylor, North Atlanta High School, Atlanta, GA
Justin Taylor was one of Nick Saban’s first commitments in the 2012 class. However, Taylor recently opened up his recruitment after being told he could not sign with the Crimson Tide this year. Coach Saban wants Taylor to grayshirt and enroll at Alabama in 2013. After hearing the news, Justin took an official to Ole Miss. Taylor’s coach Stanley Pritchett told the AJC’s Michael Carvell that, “They’re showing him a good time. He’s really enjoying the visit.” Taylor will sit down with Pritchett and discuss his options on who to sign with.
DL Sam Jowers, Westminster School, Atlanta, GA
Jowers has multiple offers from Ivy League schools but the offer that he is giving the most thought involves being a walk-on. Georgia told the defensive lineman that they want him as a preferred walk-on because they do not have room for him in this year’s class. Jowers visited Athens over the weekend and walked away thoroughly impressed. While speaking with ESPN Dawgnation’s Kipp Adams, Sam Jowers said, “I am really blown away by Georgia right now so I am leaning towards them but I am not positive yet.” Jowers will pick between the Georgetown Hoyas and the Bulldogs on signing day.
