It is still February 2012 but already high school football players are rushing to claim spots for February 2013′s National Signing Day. Ole Miss was the place to be last weekend when the country’s No. 1 prospect, Grayson’s Robert Nkemdiche showed up for a junior day. According to a report from RebelGrove.com, Nkemdiche, whose older brother Denzel is a freshman defensive back for the Rebels, had a nice time. RebelGrove.com also spoke with Nkemdiche’s father, who fancied the idea that the brothers could be on the same time as they were for Grayson. Nkemdiche also won the Atlanta Sports Award as the high school athlete of the year. Grayson coach Mickey Conn snagged the award for Coach of the Year.
Northgate’s DeAndre Johnson pledged to the University of Georgia, becoming the seventh commitment for Mark Richt’s 2013 class. Johnson stands 6-foot-3, weighs 311 pounds and is a defensive tackle prospect at the next level. Georgia already has a commitment from former Spalding standout Chris Mayes, who is currently enrolled at a junior college in Mississippi.
Finally the three finalists for the AJC 2012 Prep Slam Dunk Contest certainly have a decorated list of offer sheets. Southwest DeKalb’s Shaq Goodwin is one of the state’s “Big Three” and is headed to Memphis. Chris Bolden of North Gwinnett has signed with Georgia Tech. Both players’ high school teams are still alive in the GHSA playoffs. Meanwhile, Dauson Womack of North Cobb Christian helped his team to an undefeated regular season, but the Eagles were bounced in the first round. Womack is 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, and averaged over 14 points per game and 11 rebounds per game during his senior season. One game earlier this year the small forward notched 22 points and 22 rebounds, so the offers may come later on during the late signing period which lasts from April 11-May 16.
