Despite the fact that his father won a co-national championship with Georgia Tech, Milton defensive end Carl Lawson pledged to Auburn over the Yellow Jackets this past weekend. Lawson joined The Official Visit on AM 790 last night to talk about his recruiting process, and there is little doubt that Lawson will head to the Plains after next year. The junior defensive end had zero offers before taking part in December’s Rising Seniors Game. After an incredible week of practice and a fine performance in the all-star game, the offers quickly started pouring in for Lawson.
“The Rising Seniors All-Star game was a great experience and a blessing,” said Lawson. “I found out I was good.”
Lawson received 25 offers in the weeks after the game, and he started making visits soon after. One of the first trips was to Auburn.
“I loved (Auburn) every time I went down there. I took a different family member each time and everyone loved it.” Lawson said he visited Auburn seven times, taking in everything from the coaches to the environment to fellow students to players. “Each time I went, I checked off something new from my list (of needs).”
The self-described “explosive athlete” with a “no-stop attitude” liked the fact that the Auburn coaches want him to step in and immediately compete. “I have the opportunity to go out and start,” said Lawson of his first-year expectations.
Lawson admitted that while his quickness is a strength, sometimes he can get out of control, so he will work on that during his senior year at Milton. “I am always trying to get better.”
He said he is 100 percent committed to Auburn, but his parents still want him to take a few other visits. Lawson predicted he will travel to UCLA, Vanderbilt and likely Alabama before February. He will be glad though when the process is 100 percent finished. While he liked the attention that comes with recruiting, the process does have its drawbacks. “(Recruiting) took time away from me, away from class and from trying to improve.”
For a player with zero offers before he took on and dominated the best of the best, Lawson certainly has options now. He calls himself blessed, but it will be Auburn fans that should count their blessings should he show up and play to his ever-improving ability.
